Do you have a plan?

The following quote is from the book Thoughts are Things by Bob Proctor.   It's very simple but very accurate when having the desire to build a business like we have.

"The true mark of success isn't in the opportunity, it lies in what you do with that opportunity.  Opportunity is always knocking.  Start doing the right things in the right order, and you'll start hearing that knock."

One thing that quote is saying to me is no matter what we might want to do, there will be a process to follow.   Many people think about what they want and don't seem to buy into the idea that writing out goals is what they have to do.   Once goals are on paper the question is what are the steps (process) we have to follow?

Example, let's say your goal is to become debt free.   What are the steps that are needed to achieve that?
Maybe it's about becoming an Ex. Coordinator.  The steps might look like this: I will approach 2 people a day, have 3 appointments a week, sponsor 1st levels weekly, present the opportunity at every appointment, increase my GPV 100 per week or 400 PV per month for 6 months, conduct in-home events for products and earning opportunity.

Now we have a plan to follow and this is when the learning starts and of course how a person get's really good at doing the basic fundamentals is by repetition.   When you improve yourself and your skills, growth happens.     Think about it.  Then create your plan for achieving what it is you want.

If they can conquer fear...

Most of us who come into this business have never done many of the things we must do in Shaklee if we expect growth and change to occur.  The following is a great quote from Eleanor Roosevelt.

"We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by
each experience in which we really stop to look fear
in the face.....  We must do that which we think we cannot."
                                                                                Eleanor Roosevelt

The part that strikes me the most is when she says, "We must do that which we think we cannot."  I'm sure many of you had some doubt when you first saw this opportunity.   I know that I wondered if it were really possible to have the kind of future that I heard about at the meetings I attended.   I recall thinking, it's easy for them (the speaker) to talk that way but I had loads of doubt but at the same time I wanted it to be true.

The more meetings I attended the more my belief grew.  I met and heard lots of average people who had already made it to higher levels of income.  That was the part I liked best about the meetings.  The stories.
The more stories I heard the more my thoughts started to change to, "I think I can do this.  I just have to learn how to do this.  If they can do it, I can do it."    Those simple words were like magic for me because I bought into it 100%....IF THEY CAN DO IT, I CAN DO IT."

The reason you can build to whatever level you want is because others have done it hundreds and thousands of times before you.   How's your self-talk?  Are you nice to yourself or do you beat yourself up verbally?
This business is more mental than we give it credit for.   My suggestion for this week? Pay attention to what your thoughts are every day.   You'll learn what thoughts have to be eliminated, and what you have to accept.

Where are you headed?

There seem to be so many things a person can think about and/or be doing to build a successful Shaklee business.  In my mind this business is very simple but keep in mind that simple is not the same as easy.
I have learned that principles are what really count and once a person knows and understands a few major principles, then works at those principles, they will get results.   If you work the principles, the principles will work.

Here is a definition of principle:   A "principle" is a fundamental truth that serves as the foundation for effective behaviors.

I would strongly suggest that you read that definition several times because having "effective behaviors" is obviously a key factor for growth.  Here is an example of a important principle and something to think about.

People often complain about lack of time when direction is the real problem.
                                                                                            Zig Ziglar

So maybe the question for the day is, what is my direction....or...where am I headed.....or.....am I doing the right things.....I believe that asking yourself questions helps to get the answers.

Think about it.

How to conquer fear

The following quote from Dale Carnegie is THE ANSWER to conquer fear.  Don't let it's simplicity fool you into thinking it isn't accurate.

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."
— Dale Carnegie

It is amazing what taking action can and will do for the person who is ready to grow their business.  By getting busy, taking the action, it will for sure gain you experience of what to do as well as what not to do.  You will learn what works for you.

Decide to take action on something you have been thinking about for days, weeks or even months.  In some cases even years.    Test this quote.....Read it again......once more.  Once you start the action it doesn't mean everything will work 100%, far from it.  I do believe though that regardless of what happens you will feel good about your effort.

Do you have any barriers?

I got up early today thinking about a message. As I went through my morning routine of reading my daily devotional and Proverbs I came across a word.........Barriers!

What are the barriers that might be holding you back from growing your life and business to the level you are capable of growing to? I don't know what you face on a daily basis but I do feel I know that you have potential to become much more than you have. This goes for me as well.

Here's a suggestion, make it a point to create a plan for your day....get a note pad and write down 3 to 5 things you would like to get done today. Then give each thing you want to accomplish a number 1 - 5 or whatever you have chosen to accomplish for today. The number 1 is the most important.....and so on.

Focus on accomplishing #1 and don't move to #2 until #1 is accomplished. Here is my suggestion. As you decide to accomplish #1.......this being the most important thing you want to get done TODAY, pay attention to yourself.....are there barriers coming up that stops you? Where is your thinking? What barriers, if any, continuously stop you from doing what you want to do? See if you can crash through a barrier that might be holding you back.

This will be a challenge for most of us, but hey....why not do something different today. Accepting challenges is one method for breaking barriers. Accepting challenges is also a way of life because this is how you get better.

Ability, motivation, & attitude

The longer I'm in this business the more I'm convinced that more people can build and grow a future to high levels if they would just accept the idea that there are no secrets.   There have been untold numbers of books that outline what steps to take, but there are no secrets.   There are meetings, conferences, webinars, conference calls and three way calls all which are designed to help people get a grasp of what it takes, but there are no secrets.

There is a quote from Lou Holtz who was one of the best football coaches in the country at one time. He taught the following;
"Ability is what you're capable of doing.
                                     Motivation determines what you do.
Attitude determines how well you do it."

Coach Holtz doesn't say what your upline does or what your company does.  It's about the individual, you and me. We can have personal coaches, mentors, and untold great videos.  But it still comes back to you and me. Based on coach Holtz's three points, I think it comes down to this.  You have the ability...YES...You do have the ability but you have to be willing to learn.   This means willing to do what has to be done and learn as you go.

So ability is something you have.  It is your responsibility to become motivated.  Get to meetings.  Read books.  Have a mentor who has done what it is you want to do. Listen and act on what you learn.   The final thing everyone needs is the right attitude. Having a great attitude takes work but a great attitude will help you also become an overcomer. People with great attitudes have obstacles and problems and fears just like everyone else, but they continue to make progress because their attitude won't allow them to have a "poor me" outlook. A person who won't be stopped can't be stopped.  Are you that person?

It's about getting better

There are certain things that everyone must take responsibility for while building a Shaklee business.   It is your responsibility to first of all put yourself in a growth environment so you can give yourself the opportunity to be trained.   The next thing of course is to create a growth environment so the people you have on your team have the opportunity to learn and train themselves.

Training! When it comes to developing the various skills that will make you more successful it comes down to your self-discipline.  What you do for yourself counts far more than what others have done or can do for you.  Know what it is you want to become or achieve, then take the responsibility to train yourself  in the areas you know must be learned....such as becoming effective in prospecting, etc.

The following was taken from Signposts on The Road To Success.   "Nothing will take the place of hard work intelligently directed.  It is you and you alone who will do the developing.  Put your whole self into life.  Study, drive yourself.  Always remember that your worst enemy is inside of you.  No circumstance can conquer you as long as you do not destroy your own prospects yourself.  Always seek to improve yourself."

As most of you know, what you and I become is more important than what we get.  Work on yourself, read books, talk to your mentor about getting better.  Personal development is the key and no one can do it for you, except you.    Think about it.

Enthusiastically,

Gary Burke

Who's in control of...

I was looking at the book Go for NO! and reading some of my highlighted pages. I came across the statement that we have absolutely no control over what others think, say or do, but we do have control over what we think, say or do. As I think about the fact that if it's to be it's all up to me, it's very clear that I have choices to make.

Personally, I believe my job for managing myself is this: I have to put myself in situations where I have the best chance to win, and at the same time create a growth environment so people in our downline can also have a good chance to win. Of course I can't pressure people to do the things I'd like to see them do, but I can create a growth environment because then it is their choice of what actions to take.

I have be as consistent as possible because staying active and leading the way is obviously very important. So maybe the question for today is this: if you sponsored me, what do I see you doing?  Do you provide regular meetings for me to attend? Do you have new people coming into your personal group? Is your monthly PV growing each month or at least every quarter? Do you have two or three people to work with who are serious about becoming a sales leader? Are you getting to the next rank?

If those things are taking place you are creating an incredible growth environment for the people in your downline. Lead the way. Be the example.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Faye and I want to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow.  The following few words
are very powerful.  This is something to think about for your coming year.

I found the following in the book KNOW….DOUBT by John Ortberg.

If I leap, if I trust,
I do not know for sure
What will happen.

What I do know is this:
If I don’t leap,
If I don’t trust,
If I don’t hope,
If I don’t ask,

I will never soar.

Choices...challenges...change

I think we are aware that the choices we make are what eventually take us in a certain direction.    So the question for today is....what direction are you currently headed?   Do you have new people coming into your organization every month?  Is your monthly volume increasing or is it the same as it was last year?   Do you have 2 or more people in your personal group who are working to get to Director?

So it's clear that we are where we are today because of past choices.  One of the most exciting things to me has been the idea that by making new choices we can literally change our life as well as our business.  We can change anything by changing our mind.  Just think about that for a minute.   That's a very powerful principle.   By changing our mind our future can be different.  It is an awesome challenge to know we can literally make desired changes by changing our mind.

So what is it you would like to change about yourself, your business, and of course your future.  It will always be about the choices we make and whether or not we accept the challenges it takes to make things happen.  Think about it.   Then write out the changes you want on a piece of paper and create your plan for your new you, your new business and of course your new future.

Change is challenging but it can also be very exciting.   Accept the challenge.   It's something to think about.

How to get new results

Thanks to Rod Larkin for the following comments.

Gary Burke

Too many people try to accomplish something they've never done before by doing what they've always done, which usually ends up in frustration and disappointment.        Albert Einstein said- "To keep doing the same things and expect different results is insanity."
If you want things to change, you must be willing to change first and start doing NEW things-- NEW activities and NEW levels of activities (the amount of activity-- all things that perhaps you've never done before.

Over the years, anytime I've had a person share a BIG, new goal with me, I have always made this statement and I have always asked this question-- "You are planning to do something you've never done/accomplished before.  In order to get there, are you willing to do something (activity-wise) that you've never done before?"  Most people say yes, but very few people are willing to make the necessary changes to do the necessary activities that are required to accomplish his/her goal.

One example would be-- If a person has a goal to earn $10,000 a month in Shaklee, this would mean building to the Key Coordinator level.  This is something a person has never done before.  A person cannot expect to reach this goal by doing the same things he/she has been doing.  The things you have been doing have resulted in where you are now.  NEW changes and NEW activities are the only thing that will make a difference in the results one gets towards reaching this goal.

NEW goals require=> NEW thinking and NEW behavior in order to get NEW results!

A simple thought for today

Greetings,

The following came from Les Giblin and it struck me that people would enjoy this business more if they
had the following simple view for building their future.

"Knowledge itself is of no value.  It is THE USE OF KNOWLEDGE that makes it valuable.  Putting this thought another way - life does not pay off for you on what you can do.  Life pays off for you on what you do."

When you read the last few words in that quote, I wonder what you might be thinking about what you're
going to do today?  Why not start your day with the commitment to DO WHAT WILL PAY OFF FOR YOU.
Get a pad of paper and write your list the the top 5 things you're going to do today.

Have a successful day.

November 12 Daily Message

Well, I’m back at writing my daily messages.  It’s been almost three weeks since my last message so I’ll start with shorter messages and work my way into more messages and ideas.  I also want to say I greatly appreciate those of you who connected with me during this lost time.  THANK YOU!

Time seems to slip by so maybe I’ll start by asking a question.  The following is from a book by Arnold Palmer and it starts with a question.  “Are you stuck?  Are you caught up in a frustrating cycle?  It takes guts to get out of ruts.  Imagination is often more important than knowledge.  Maybe it’s time to let yourself think new thoughts and dream new dreams.”

The key words to me in that quote says that maybe it’s time to let yourself think new thoughts and to start dreaming again.   Go back in your mind when you first heard of Shaklee and how exciting it was to find a company like we have.   Learning about this new company with products that were of very high quality, as well as having an income opportunity that has the potential to help you earn whatever you want to earn.   I know when I think back to those first few months it was very exciting.  I’m really good at dreaming and that’s what I think of when I think of those first few months.

Are you thinking new thoughts?   Do you still have a dream about building yourself a business that could change your life?  Well the Shaklee dream is still alive.  That’s right.  The Shaklee dream is very much alive like it was the first time you were introduced to this opportunity.  This is a new day.  Starting over is always a great idea so my suggestion is that you take today as the time to dream again.

Simple steps

At times when we get an idea to do something we haven't done in a while, or maybe we've never before and it feels like the whole world is watching.  Maybe we just don't feel we can give as good a presentation as that other person, or be as good on the phone as we would like to be.   Or we want to approach someone about the products and/or the opportunity......BUT WE DO NOTHING.

I've done this in the past so I know many of you have done the same thing. Do nothing. I think there are two possible reasons this happens.
1. Fear
2.  Not being prepared.

I can't teach you how to overcome fear but I think part of the answer is #2....Not being or feeling prepared.

Keep in mind that the first step is our thoughts. If we think it, that is probably our truth.  We buy into our own thoughts  and just kind of say to ourselves, "Next time I'll be better prepared."   To me the major point in doing the things we think are difficult is to watch our thinking and learn to fight back mentally and have some good self talk. Get prepared mentally. Talk nicely to yourself. Understand that it's okay for a person to say "No." You're looking for those people who want what Shaklee has to offer and are willing to do what we do.

If we really believe that Shaklee is different, is the best, has the best products, and we have an opportunity that can literally change a persons financial future, let's offer it to the world.   Have a strong mind set.  Start thinking better.   GO  4  IT.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke

Taking responsibility

Everyone who is involved with Shaklee is an independent contractor and that simply means that we are self-employed.  We do not work for our upline or the company as we are the CEO's of our business as well as CEO's of our future.  Personally I have enjoyed being CEO of our future for many years as I never would have said I was an entrepreneur in the beginning.   I wasn't looking for a business I was looking for a job and I feel incredibly blessed that I learned how to be an entrepreneur.

Of course since we all are CEO's, the person in charge of what we want as well as being in charge of what has to be accomplished, it is vital that we have good work ethic.   We have to be willing to put ourselves doing the right things which means we must be self-motivated.   Basically each individual is responsible for their own motivation and inspiration.   The other thing I learned very early in the game is this is in many ways an attitude business.   You and I are responsible for our attitudes.

This brings up a question.  What do I have to do to have a good attitude, be motivated and be inspired?    What do you read?  Who do you listen to?  Are the people you spend time with encouraging?  Do you know what/who inspires you?   Are you attending meetings because in my opinion when I look back at the years when I got started I always felt better leaving a meeting than when I arrived.  That is one reason I personally believe so strongly in meetings.   Nothing beats eye to eye relationships.

Do you dare to follow your dream?

What I’m going to do today is give you a couple quotes I found in a book titled Dare To Lead,
By Brene Brown.  As you read these simple quotes don’t just read them and move on to the
next word.   Ask yourself a couple questions and maybe even print these out and ponder over
what is being said by the writer.

“To dare is not saying “I’m willing to risk failure.”  Daring is saving “I know I will eventually fail,
and I’m still all in.”  I’ve never met a brave person who hasn’t known disappointment, failure,
 even heartbreak.

What stands in the way becomes the way.”
-  Marcus Aurelius

What’s standing in your way from building your future by building your Shaklee business?
Is it prospecting?  Giving a presentation?  Maybe it's follow-up. Doing meetings?

Knowing how to win/develop is key

Developing first level Directors is something you can learn how to do, and believe me, it doesn't just happen because someone says they love the products or they love what Shaklee represents. Learning to win in athletics is the same as learning to develop Directors. Building a successful Shaklee business is such a head game, meaning it's about how we think, our attitude and our expectations.

I saw a brief interview where the player said,"Nothing is going to hold me back from putting out 100% effort because I have this deep desire to win."

I loved hearing that because I believe that is one thing I know it takes to win or to build Directors.  An attitude that says NOTHING will stop me from putting in the effort and making it happen. Of course, yes, it does take hard work to find that right person and then to help guide and teach them how to become successful at the Director level.

Let me suggest that you consider to accept that same attitude about your future success in Shaklee.  It doesn't matter if you are very part time or if you are full time; it's about attitude and putting in the effort to make things happen.

Go for it!

She finished!

Yesterday as I was checking into LifeTime to do my daily workout I noticed that the young woman who works there was wearing a plastic boot. I asked her what happened and she said she fractured her foot last week as she was running in a local marathon. I asked her if she was able to finish as a marathon is over 26 miles. She said when it happened all she could do was walk the remaining distance which was over 5 miles. So that’s what she did. She walked the last 5 miles

I made a comment about how difficult it must have been and she said,“I wasn’t going to quit after preparing for weeks and months on my daily runs. I was going to finish and I did!” Her finishing time was over 5 hours and she walked the last 5 miles with a fractured foot!

I walked away feeling very inspired. I’m not sure most people would continue to the finish line but this young woman knew that she had prepared for months and she wasn’t about to quit. I was impressed.

What’s the point with this little story? She had put in the work to be prepared and she wasn’t about to quit. I can’t help but think that she put in many hours over time but nothing was going to stop her.   This has been on my mind quite a bit since yesterday. I wonder how many people have started a Shaklee business and then because of an obstacle of some kind just called it a day.

It’s not easy running a marathon. It’s not always easy building a Shaklee business. But when a person has decided to finish what they have started, they do whatever it takes.

Get to be free of doubt

On Sunday at church I heard these words....."To be free of doubt...." Later in the day I was going over some notes and I read that again...."To be free of doubt." I couldn't help but think about how important it is to be free of doubt while building this business. Doubt makes us hesitate and not take steps to grow like we are capable of doing.

If I think back I know I was excited when I first heard about this opportunity. I didn't know squat about anything but I was curious and somewhat excited. Of course the opposite of doubt is belief and when our business changed was when my belief changed. My belief about the company, the products, the idea that incomes were being earned by scores of people, and probably the major turning point for me back then was when I got to the point where I knew that I knew we could build this business to whatever size we chose. That is what I call...I broke the code.

Being free of doubt is like carrying mental weights around and all of a sudden that weight is gone,  and having belief is exciting and makes it much easier to talk to people, get appointments, etc.   So what is it that helps build belief?  What you read, who you spend time with, and who you listen to.  If you have great positive books and stories to read, you're around people who are encouraging and positive...like Shaklee meetings, and you listen to CDs and watch DVDs that have potential to help you learn and helps build your confidence...that to me is how you can be FREE OF DOUBT.

Doubt is like being handcuffed - belief is exciting and builds confidence. Everyone has the choice of how they want to live and having that freedom from doubt and negativity is an incredible blessing.  Of course doubt has a way of returning but once you know how to fight back - by reading a good book, talking to those who encourage, and listening to good messages - you'll always be the winner.

Do you have a plan for your business growth?

The following quote is from the book Thoughts are Things by Bob Proctor.   It's very simple
but very accurate when having the desire to build a business like we have.

"The true mark of success isn't in the opportunity, it lies in what you do with that opportunity.
Opportunity is always knocking.  Start doing the right things in the right order, and you'll start
hearing that knock."

One thing that quote is saying to me is no matter what we might want to do, there will be a process
to follow. Many people think about what they want and don't seem to buy into the idea that writing
out goals is what they have to do. Once goals are on paper the question is what are the steps (process)
we have to follow?

Example, let's say your goal is to become debt free. What are the steps that are needed to achieve that? Maybe it's about becoming an Ex. Coordinator.
The steps might look like this: I will approach 2 people a day; I will have 3 appointments a week; sponsor 1st levels weekly; present the opportunity at every appointment; increase my GPV 100 per week or 400 PV per month for 6 months; and conduct in-home events for products and earning opportunity.

Now we have a plan to follow and this is when the learning starts and of course how a person get's
really good at doing the basic fundamentals is by repetition. When you improve yourself and your
skills, growth happens. Think about it. Then create your plan for achieving what it is you want.

Stories are powerful

I’ve been thinking about what we did the first 12 months after we joined Shaklee. I had made the
decision that we were going to build this business no matter what it might take. The reason I
was committed to become successful in Shaklee was because I wanted everything Shaklee was
offering. It didn’t grow as fast as I thought it would but I knew from experience that a key for
improvement meant I had some learning to do.

One major thing we learned was we had to learn how to tell our story. We didn’t have much to
talk about but the reason I say we had to learn telling our simple story was because that is what
I saw our sponsor do every week. He told his story about the products and about how he saw the
future of this business. I heard his story many times but I always left the meetings feeling better
than when I arrived. In other words, I always got inspired at the meetings.

I went to meetings every week. Actually, I attended two meetings a week for the first 6 to 7 months.
The meetings my sponsor did in his home had 3 to 6 people attending. The meetings grew larger
than just a few people but what I remember most was the success stories and testimonies about
the products.

Do you have a good simple story to tell? Do you find yourself telling your story at every appointment? I can assure you that the more you tell your story, you will experience growth.

Stories have power.

Gary Burke

It's about choices

Are you happy with your effort for the past couple of months? If you are then just continue to keep at it as consistency is what will create growth. If you aren't satisfied with your last months' efforts...not a problem. We all get to start over again and make sure that this month will be more productive.

Everyone should have a plan to back up their goals. No goals and no plan equates into very little if any effort. My guess is if you are reading this right now you want to grow your personal PV. You want to make a difference for yourself and your family.

Why not decide right now that this month is going to be better than last month? It's all about making choices. It's about our attitude and our choices. It's your decision and only you can make it.

Think about it! Work hard! Have fun! You won't regret it.

We are mountain climbers

I am very thankful that I found Shaklee over 48 years ago. I had no idea what was true and what wasn’t but I decided to invest some time to see what’s what. I learned early that having a vision for what you might want would be a key factor. At first everything felt like there was a mountain to climb but the more I learned the more my belief grew and the mountain started to look like it would be doable with the right leadership. My vision seemed to see a smaller mountain because others were making their business work and that was encouraging. In this business we are mountain climbers.

What’s interesting about this business is there comes a day when the mountain kind of tells us that we can do it. We can make this work. That moment comes when suddenly we find that we are able to believe.  You are able to see everything as being doable. Maybe this belief came from an inspirational talk you heard. Maybe it was because of a book you read. Maybe it was that one meeting that was really special. Once you find yourself able to believe, to really have belief, that’s when you know you can build yourself a wonderful future.

It’s now commitment time. It’s kind of a leap of faith. You’re inspired. You’re thinking different.  You keep telling yourself that you can make it fly. It’s time to make a decision. Period. It won’t always be easy but if those other people could make it work so can you.

It’s time to move forward in spite of our fears and doubts. There will be questions and there will be a learning curve. You must be willing to learn from those who have achieved. Our job is to keep our dream alive and do whatever it takes to build the kind of business you really want.

You’ll never regret working hard at building your future.

I suggest you read this a few times - slowly

I found the following in the book KNOW….DOUBT  by John Ortberg.

If I leap, if I trust,
I do not know for sure
What will happen.

What I do know is this:
If I don’t leap,
If I don’t trust,
If I don’t hope,
If I don’t ask,

I will never soar.

Simple ideas for the day

Here are a couple principles to consider. If the question is what does it take to get myself and my
business to improve, here is something to think about.

The most effective way to improve is by repetition. The more you do the same thing over and
over, and over, the better you will become.

There is no problem that you’ll ever have in your business that can’t be solved by increased activity.
Increased activity is a cure-all for most of the questions about growth.

What do you have planned for today? Why not take 10 minutes starting right now and plan what
you’ll do today? This is a simple way to get yourself started doing the things you want to get done.

Are you encouraged?

"What's the single most important thing you do as a leader?" As I was reading an article this kind of jumped off the page at me because in our business we are called sales leaders so it makes sense to learn what leaders should be like. The answer given is, "That's easy.  The single most important thing I do is to make sure I stay encouraged." It goes on to say, "If I'm not encouraged, eventually nothing else matters."

This brings up a question to me: what do I have to do to make sure I'm encouraged? I would have to say that for the most part being around other people who are inspired and encouraged has really helped me. This means going to meetings, attending webinars, going to every event possible, read good books, have a mentor who encourages because that's what they do. Over the years I have lost a lot of sleep after attending a meeting and hearing someone tell their story. Very simply, stories inspire and encourage.

Do yourself a favor and make it a point to do something every day that has potential to be encouraging for you. If you do this I can assure you it will make it easier to be doing the things we need to do in order to grow personally as well as grow our business.

Are you willing?

The following is probably my favorite quote - it's from Tom Landry, a Hall of Fame NFL football coach talking about achievement. and what it takes.

"My job is to make people do things they don't want to do, so they can achieve what they want to achieve."

Please allow me to say that in a different way to those of you who sincerely want to grow your Shaklee business to higher levels: our job is to start doing the things we don't want to do, so we can achieve what we want to achieve.

What holds most people back from having the kind of business they dream about? They just aren't willing to do the things it takes to build. When I got started I remember exactly what I didn't really look forward to doing. My obstacle was prospecting. I had never done anything like prospecting. I didn't like making calls. Speaking in front of people was the other thing that was a obstacle for me.  Why do we have the business we have? Because I decided if we were going to experience everything Shaklee offered, I was going to have to start learning to do what I didn't like doing.

What is it that you feel might be holding you back from achieving at higher levels? It's all about making a decision. Go for it. You'll never regret learning to do what you might not like doing.

We have no limits

Chasing a dream.... I have seen those words in many books and magazines over the years and I always seem to hesitate and think about what we do in this business. I don't know if you feel that you have been chasing a dream, but when I think back to our beginnings in Shaklee I'm reminded that I wasn't looking for this kind of a business. I was looking for a job.

The possibilities that Shaklee offered were very compelling to me and that is what encouraged me to check it out.  What if it were true?  What if this company is everything my sponsor described it to be?  What if the products are really as great as he says?  There were a few "what if's?  I knew I needed a future as I had a job but it didn't have much of a future in my eyes.

I learned by attending as many meetings as possible that what my sponsor described to me was true because I met many people at meetings that were making it happen. Okay, so it's true but what about me? I started to think different and this means I started to think I could build this business and before I knew it I found myself chasing a dream.  What it comes down to in my mind is this, it's about allowing yourself to start dreaming and think about what your new future can be like.

Think about it friends....create your dream and then run it down, chase after it. We have no limits on what we can do but that means we have to think and believe that way.

What's really important?

I read the following yesterday and it really jumped off the page at me. There are times when I have felt totally overwhelmed about what should I do next in building this business......especially in the early years. This statement made me think about those times.

"If you haven't clearly identified what is the most important, then everything seems important."

Another way to say this might be, I just don't seem to have time to do everything there is to do. Well think about this: once you decide what IS the most important, the 1 or 2 things that absolutely must be done if you are to grow your business, it's easier to grow. Why? Because the focus is on the absolutely most important things you know you should be doing.  Kind of simple.

The challenge is to decide to decide that you will be working on the 1 or 2 most important things to do. It seems to me that this might be something to make sure you develop the habit of doing.......working/doing the most important things you know it will take to grow. THINK ABOUT IT!

The word for today is BOLD

This is a word that I know I needed when I think back about my getting started in this business. As I reflect back, the most difficult part for me was approaching people on the idea of the Shaklee products or the opportunity. A little background on myself is needed here I think. I can't ever remember raising my hand in school to answer a question. I can remember kind of slinking down in my seat with hope that the teacher couldn't see me to call on. Speaking up even if I knew the answer or had an opinion was very difficult and I did everything I could to not be noticed.

Fast forward to the idea that this business had huge potential for people who were willing to talk to people and get appointments, give presentations, etc. There were so many times when I would walk away from someone thinking to myself, "I wish I had talked to that person about Shaklee." I had a lot to learn and I knew that if I wanted this business to work for us I had to be more bold.

I read books, I listened to people give presentations and for them it seemed so simple and easy although I'm sure it always wasn't. I decided I had to step up to the plate and be more bold. To make a long story short what happened basically was I kind of willed myself to start doing the small things. Asking questions, being a good listener, get appointments and of course learning to tell the Shaklee story in a very simple way.

The best thing was this, I knew this company, products and opportunity was really special.  It was interesting because hearing "No" never really bothered me. The difficult part was, what if they say "Yes?" The boldness turned to confidence and that only happens because of activity. Putting myself in motion and being bold was my answer and of course over time my confidence grew.

I will say this, the personal development that takes place in this business is more valuable than anything else I can think of. Believe me friends, if you decide to put yourself in motion, talk to people, do the things that may feel difficult at times and reach down deep within yourself and be bold, you will experience that personal development. Go for it. Be a doer. Be bold.

Being consistent is...

Today I want to focus on the word consistency. If there is one thing Faye and I have tried to do over the years, it is being consistent with our efforts as well as our thinking about this incredible business.  For example, there are certain fundamentals for this business that once we figured out what they were, we stuck with them and basically just tried to get better at following them.

"It's not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It's what we do consistently."
- Anthony Robbins

Talking to people on a regular basis, attend as many meetings as possible, learn from those who have accomplished what we wanted, conduct regular meetings, regular appointments, 3 way calls, once I started doing these messages the feedback encouraged me to be consistent sending them out, we were consistent at the little things that turn into big things over time.

Read that above quote again and again. If you want to build your future around this great company are you doing the basic fundamentals over and over and over again? Consistently. A very simple message that has huge potential is be the person who is consistent.

Why not now? Why not you?

Here we are in September. How is your month going? Have you sponsored some new people? Will your PV be higher than last month? Are you having appointments this week? You still have time to make this month be a great month.

"If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves."
- Thomas A. Edison

I found that quote this past weekend and it caught my attention. All of us are capable of doing so much more than we probably do. I know this is certainly true for myself and I'm sure many of you would agree with the above quote. So, why not make a plan for the rest of September for doing what we all are capable of doing. Just think how fun it can be to literally astound ourselves. It will set the stage to make October be a terrific month. Why not? Go for it. Be the example.

The answer to conquer fear

The Best - from Jim Rohn

The following is in my opinion one of the best messages Jim Rohn has ever expressed.
I need to say no more.

Gary Burke

Jim Rohn: Change Begins with Choice

Any day we wish, we can discipline ourselves to make important changes in our lives. Any day we wish, we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish, we can start a new activity. Any day we wish, we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make.

We created our current circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions.   We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life: If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree. You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life—and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

The key is being determined

I read the following a couple weeks ago and of course saved it because it made sense to me.

Most people succeed because of being determined, not because of talent.

Think about that statement. Believe it. Make a decision to become more determined to work hard and develop business building skills. As you develop the needed skills you will get better and better as time goes along.

Get determined. Stay determined. Everything is in our favor as we have the absolute best products to work with as well as a earning opportunity that has worked for thousands of people, and a very unique company with excellent leadership in Roger Barnett.

Start now to build momentum for the growth you want to have in 2018 - 2019. You'll never regret working hard at this business.

Be bold. Have fun. Build your future.

I found this book titled How To Be Interesting by Jessica Hagy.  The title kind of interested me and compelled me to look through it and it seemed like something that would be fun to read so I bought it a few weeks ago. So today I want to share what is on one page of this very fun little book.

Have No Shame
Sing badly and loudly.
Skip down the street.
Go to that open mic night.
Un-censor your personality.
More people will smile than laugh.
and if they laugh, that's their sad problem

I've read this a few times this morning and each time it makes me think about our business.  I know for a fact that many of us don't do things we want to do, or we don't talk to people we want to talk to about the business or the products because, what will they say?  What will they think?  Will they laugh or criticize?

Talk to everyone.  Be bold.  Have fun.  Build your future. Smile!
As it says, "if they laugh, that's their sad problem."

When is the best time?

There are times when I read something it just kind of jumps off the page. I had that again this AM so I hope this makes you think about what to do and when to do it. Simple stuff but interesting.

The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago.
The second best time is now.
                                           A Proverb

The best time to call someone was last month.
The second best time is now.

The best time to build this business was in 1970.
The second best time is now.

The best time to achieve your goals was last year.
The second best time is now.

The best time to make a commitment to achieve was when you first got started.
The second best time is now.

How do you win?

I was wandering around a local book store a couple weeks ago and came across a interesting title of a book so I bought it. The book is FAIL Until you Don't, by Bobby Bones. Read that title a couple times and see what it says to you. What it says to me is to keep at it until you've won the so-called battle.   The following is on the inside flap of the book.

How do you win?  You lose a few times along the way.

FIGHT :  Deciding what it is you want; setting your goals; and strategizing and taking the first steps toward that goal.

GRIND :  Never missing a detail; always being ready and on call; and doing the work no matter how tired, sick, or over it you feel.

REPEAT : Having the patience, resources, and resilience to keep doing the same thing over and over until you get what it is you really want.

It's never too late

In a magazine I was reading there was a great article about this 89 year old man who finally got his high school diploma. He talked about how important it was to him and how pleased he was to have that diploma. Isn't that a great example of not giving up but doing what had to be done to earn that recognition? After all those years he finally finished what he started many, many years earlier.

Here is the point for me and I hope for you. It's never too late to finish what you start. Every once in a while I get the question like, "Why do you keep on working this business?" I only have one answer.  I truly enjoy doing what I do and I love this business.  I'm not finished. I have actually said that many, many times...I just don't feel like it's over.

I grew up in a single parent home in the 1940s and 50s. My mother was a tough lady and very smart.   She had three boys and one girl and in those years it was unusual to be a single mother of four kids.  My mother was our model for the kind of people she wanted us kids to be. What we heard in our home over and over and over was: be polite, be on time, if you tell someone you will do something, make sure you do it, if you start something, finish it.

Did you begin this business with a dream in your mind about what you could become and what you could have? Have you reached that dream? If  you have not reached what would be your dream, is that dream still alive in your mind and heart? Finish! Don't allow that dream to be idle just because of obstacles and setbacks. Finish! Don't compare yourself with anyone else, just be the very best you can be. Finish!

It's never too late to finish.

Getting more experience is key

The more I think and read about building a team or building a business, the more it becomes very clear to me that there really aren't any secrets. It's about knowing what you want and then organizing your time so you can give it a good effort, learn a few principles, and very simply follow the lead of the people who have already achieved what it is you want to achieve.

Working hard is the secret. I'll bet that isn't news to anyone. Another way of saying that is make sure you get more experiences because the more experience a person creates for themselves, the easier it gets. So, if you want it to get easier work hard to have more experience.

So what are you going to do today to make some progress? Are you working from a plan? Plans don't have to be very complex. Just have a list of what you want to do, then do the hardest item on your list first. Very simple isn't it? That's the part that always impresses me: simplicity. Here is a good goal for all of us today: make sure we're doing something that gives us more experience.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke

Where are you headed?

There seem to be so many things a person can think about and/or be doing to build a successful Shaklee business. In my mind this business is very simple but keep in mind that simple is not the same as easy. I have learned that principles are what really count and once a person knows and understands a few major principles, then works at those principles, they will get results. If you work the principles, the principles will work.

Here is a definition of principle: a fundamental truth that serves as the foundation for effective behaviors.

I would strongly suggest that you read that definition several times because having "effective behaviors" is obviously a key factor for growth.  Here is an example of a important principle and something to think about - from Zig Ziglar:

People often complain about lack of time when direction is the real problem.

So maybe the question for the day is: what is my direction? Or: where am I headed? Or: am I doing the right things? Asking yourself questions helps to get the answers.

Think about it.

What kind of effort does it take?

Over the years I have wondered why more people don't achieve what they are really capable of achieving.  I probably should say that my personal belief is that for the most part I deeply believe that most people are capable of doing great things.  What I mean by great things is simply achieving dreams and goals.  I'm not thinking about leaping tall buildings and sponsoring 100 1st levels a month.

I'm thinking about goals of building to a certain rank, getting to a certain PV level, earning another $1000 a month. Those kinds of goals. Those are goals for many of you and I strongly believe you can get it done.

I would have to suggest that most people just seem to underestimate what continual effort can yield.   I have seen so many people come into Shaklee and they have thoughts of doing GREAT things. Helping multitudes of people, earning $5000 to $30,000 a month, becoming a Shaklee Master Coordinator.

I could go on but I think you get the point.  Many seem to stop when things don't appear to be working.

To me it's about just keep on keeping on. Stick with it. The only way to lose is to stop. Continual effort is what it takes and that means working the business even when it doesn't feel like it's going to work, even when 10 people just quit yesterday, even when your best friend or God forbid someone in your family gets really negative on you.

Every week isn't going to be the best week you've ever had. The people who learn to stick with it, who keep doing the fundamentals and developing their skills that are needed to grow to the point where it actually gets easier.

Continual effort is more of the answer to Shaklee success than anything I can think of.

Think about it.

Challenges are a part of growth

Something I recognized very early in my Shaklee career was the idea that I was going to have to make some changes if I wanted this to work to the level I wanted. Once I decided I wanted the benefits I saw in this opportunity, I found myself looking at things to do that I really didn't know how to do and to top that I really didn't want to do.

Approaching someone about this opportunity was obviously a major step as was conducting meetings and neither was on my list of things I couldn't wait to do. I was not comfortable even thinking about speaking in front of people on my feet. But at the same time it was clear that If I wanted this to work I was going to have to step out of my comfort zone and do some things I wasn't very good at.

What is it that is possibly holding you back from achieving to higher levels of PV and finding some new builders every year? Do you have to step out of your comfort zone as I did? All I can say is I am very happy that I decided to accept the things that challenged me. If you feel challenged but still step out give it a try and continue to do that, I know this, you will change and your future will change as well.

Decide on the size business you want. Then accept the challenges you may have and I know you and your business will grow like never before.

Who's in control?

Of course I have be as consistent as possible because staying active and leading the way is obviously very important. So maybe the question for today is this: if you sponsored me, what do I see you doing? Do you provide regular meetings for me to attend?  Do you have new people coming into your personal group? Is your monthly PV growing each month or at least every quarter? Do you have 2 or 3 people to work with who are serious about becoming a sales leader? Are you getting to the next higher rank?

If those things are taking place you are creating an incredible growth environment for the people in your downline. Lead the way. Be the example.

How to get better takes

This will be a very short, simple message but I hope it will make you think. This thought isn't mine as I found it in some of my old notes a couple weeks ago but for whatever reason I didn't have a name to give proper credit to.

Whatever you commit to is what you'll get really good at.

Just think for a couple minutes about what is it that you would like to be really good at. How about prospecting, follow up, giving a compelling presentation, selling? Maybe being positive. It could be always being a "good finder" and not a "problem finder."

So the question is, what are you committed to? Whatever the answer is for you is exactly what you'll be getting better at doing and/or being. Getting better developing skills takes practice.  Repetition is the only way to get better and better. You can't get better just listening to a CD or watching a DVD or going to a webinar every week. You can learn many things by listening and watching but in order to develop the skills you may need, that only comes from doing it over and over and over again.

Think about it. What are you committed to?

Gary Burke

Excellent Message

Jody Newell posted the following message on Facebook and is speaking from her heart.   Thank you Jody for sharing your message with us in the field.  I have read this several times since Faye pointed it out to me and I was moved every time I read it.

Gary Burke

Jody Newell posted on Richard Bliss' Facebook page as an "Ah Ha" she has had during the 90 Day Run Training.

My Ah Ha is the realization that I have been doing this wrong for so many years.  I love and believe in Shaklee and the products, and I now understand that what I found so distasteful (In my heart of hearts)  about MLM, even as I was slowly building or the asset income, there were things like the 3 foot rule, the elevator speech.  Conni just reminded me of trainers saying things like learn to see dollars on peoples faces when they get within 3 feet.  I could go on but I won't.

Regrets, I have many, opportunities missed but turning the page now building genuinely with love and being of service and honor the "No."
Thank you Richard Bliss from the bottom of my heart.  (and those who arranged this with you and opened the invite to the field)   We can't change the book we've already written but you have given us what we need for new chapters and to change the ending by helping many more people than we ever would without this training.

How far can you reach?

This morning I was thinking about doing a simple message and I got mentally stuck.  Then something I hadn't thought of for years came to mind.  When I was teaching high school kids in about 1965 I came across a simple quote that I printed on a small piece of paper.   For some reason these simple words just literally grabbed me.   I recall getting very inspired then and I feel inspired this morning.

I kept this small piece of paper with me for many years and here are those simple words, but I can't recall who said it.
"Ah, a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for."

When I just finished typing those words a thought was, Google it.  I did and there it was.
Robert Browning    Born May 07, 1812       Died December 13, 1901.

I remember sitting at a table in my small apartment above Etta's Beauty Salon and reaching out my hand in front of me and then saying those words....."My reach should exceed my grasp."    Those words still inspire me today.  Think about it for a minute, your "reach should exceed your grasp."   You can do more than you've done.  I can do more than I've done.

What this means to me today is that all of us should reach out  and do things we haven't ever done.

All of us have incredible God given potential.   Let's use it.

It's about moving forward

Making progress always seems to be a topic for me.  Moving forward is the name of the game and it's all a matter of taking the next step, doing the right things and then repeat that over and over.   If you take enough of the next steps in the right sequence that is what will eventually get you to where you want to be.

But as we all know, as we're trying our best to be doing the right things and moving forward by taking that next step, just one step at a time, things don't always work the way we want them to.  Every one of us experience small failures as we move forward and try to be consistent.  That's life.  That's just the way it is. Every day can't be the best day of our lives so in my opinion we must learn and understand that failures take place but here is a principle that I hope will help.

"It is easier to move from failure to success than it is from excuses to success."
- John Maxwell

One of the reasons I read so many books is because I get ideas and the authors become mentors to me. I learn these principles that I send your way hoping that you will keep some of these in the back of your mind or in a notebook so when things aren't working exactly the way you want them to you can refer back to them and accept the fact that it's okay....just keep on trucking forward in spite of circumstances.

Remember, by taking the next step you will eventually make progress, be moving forward, and you'll have more fun because you will be growing personally as well as in your business.

Success is not an event

I came across this statement yesterday as I was going over some notes. I'm pretty sure I have addressed this before but it's been a while and it never hurts to repeat interesting ideas. Here it is....Success is not an event. Very simple. Very accurate.

In the first couple years when I was really trying to learn and act on what I was learning the following words would be in my mind occasionally...."I wonder if this business will ever work for us like it does those people I listen to at these meetings?"  I'm just like everyone in the sense that there are good days and then there are those days that at times turn into weeks where I would have doubt.   Doubt has a way of taking away a persons energy and focus.   I learned that it was my responsibility to fight doubt every step of the way when it would appear in my mind.

What I learned about fighting doubt was simple....Positive activity that produces small successes is what overcomes that doubt.  So the message today is simple. If you want to stay positive and active it's a matter of you working at the fundamentals because when you do this you are setting the stage so to speak for the small successes to come your way. It is true that success is not an event but that success you want for yourself is right around the corner as long as you keep yourself active doing the right things for building this business.

The only way doubt can win is through inactivity. There are people in every town and city that want and need what we have to offer in terms of the products and the earning possibilities. Be active.  Positive activity will  eventually produce positive results. Think about it.

A great example

The following message from Margaret Wise is a great example about attitude and having a
system to follow. I especially love it when Margaret talks her comfort zone. I know many of you
will be encouraged with Margaret's comments. Way to go Margaret!

Hi Gary,

Just to give you an update.
I've been inviting new people to take a look at Shaklee.
So far my pv has not increased,  but I feel like I'm on the right track.  I know it doesn't work overnight.
The best thing I've accomplished is me coming out of my comfort zone to ask new people.
Some are already friends,  others are acquaintances.  We've met for our first date, like you
taught me.   Plus following Richard Brooks has been wonderful. I'm encouraged by my progress.
I met a new person Saturday evening at a dinner.  I got her phone number with the intention of getting
together with her.

One year from today

Today's message will be short but it can be very meaningful for you.  It's simple but part of the point to me is you don't want to look back and say to yourself, "I wish I would have _________."

“A year from now you will wish you had started today.”
- Karen Lamb

You always want to keep moving forward and not looking in the rear view mirror with regret.  Develop the habit to do SOMETHING every day for yourself and your business. When you add that up over a year you will be one of those who are growing.

Think about it.

What every business needs

I was asked a question recently about growing this business. They seemed to be stuck, didn't have much going on and were of course getting discouraged. After asking a few questions I learned that activity had been at a standstill for many months. Of course it's difficult for a Shaklee business to grow if there is little or no activity.

My answer was very simplistic but accurate. Our job is to learn how to get ourselves moving - DOING the fundamentals such as talking to people (what a great concept!), learning how to get appointments, telling the Shaklee story (meaning giving a presentation), etc.

Every business needs new life!
New Goals
New Excitement
New Thinking
New Behavior
New Hope
New Expectations
New Momentum
The Answer of course is.....NEW PEOPLE!

Response to "Would you like to take a look?"

From: Dan Henderson

 Good morning,
I love the approach… Would you be willing to listen to an idea… And I am totally convinced that people have to do what you’re comfortable with doing in the approach process.

The lady who sponsored me into the business said it exactly this way… “Dan, I have no Idea if you’d be interested, but if you were, you’d be very good in my business.“

I have personally used that approach to find key people I wanted to work with.

First, to say, “I have no idea if you’d be interested,” takes the pressure off… And to say you’d be very good in my business… creates a lot of curiosity.

It certainly did for me. And I wasn’t looking for a business. Certainly not a network marketing business.

Those few words she used to approach me not only created curiosity, but led me to say … “Tell me a little bit about what you do.”

She was never trained to make the approach this way. For her it was just natural and comfortable.

If there is a secret to inviting, I believe the natural approach ... the one you feel comfortable using… is best.

Every story has chapters

I heard the following yesterday and it seems to have really inspired me.  It’s very simple but it also can become very meaningful for many people.   What I heard in yesterday’s sermon was “ Every Story Has Chapters.”

I’m not writing a book but I am going to outline what a book might look like if you picked it up and started to look through it to read the chapters headings.

Chapter #1  -  Getting started to build your future.  It’s about what it will take to get started.

Chapter #2  -  Setting Goals.  Are you willing to work for what you want?   Really?

Chapter #3  -  Creating Your Plan -  Talk to your mentor.

Chapter #4  -  Be Serious About Building Your Future.   10 hrs. a week?  12 hrs. a week?   More!

Chapter #5  -  Your Title will be – Coordinator?    Key Coordinator?    Master Coordinator?

Chapter #6  -  Expectations  -  Setbacks!   Small failures!   Overcoming fears!   Stick with it.

Chapter #7  -  Follow Success  -  Keep it simple.  Stay positive.  Be an overcomer!

Chapter #8  Thru Chapter 20 -  Shaklee success stories!  If they can do it so can you.

Chapter #21  -  CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE ACHIEVED YOUR GOALS

This is a simple outline in my view about hearing about an idea, then commit to learn what the steps are that you will be following on your journey. Then don’t stop working until you have reached your goals and you have made it happen. THANK YOU for being willing to lead and for being a terrific example for others who will be joining your team.

"Would you like to take a look?"

Those of us who signed on to the 90 Day Run with Richard Brooke have just completed the first month – whether you’re one who signed on or not, the idea of inviting people to listen to the Shaklee Story by asking people if they’d “like to take a look” is relevant to all of you who want growth in your business.

Gary and I have been talking about the singular assignment for the 3 month session – invite one person (just one!) a day to “take a look” at the Shaklee Story (both products & opportunity).  Richard Brooke defines an invite as an event where:
You are invite someone to take a look and they either say “Yes”, “No” or “Maybe”.

We’ve looked at all 4 of the videos now and believe that all of them are supporting just that one activity – inviting.

Why do you think he focuses on this one thing?

I have often said that if our business depended only on what I do in our business – we wouldn’t have a business.  If our business depended only on what Gary did in our business – we would have business.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m confident I’ve made important contributions to the growth of our business.  BUT, without the recruiting that Gary was willing to force himself to do to get our business off the ground and then continue to do on our way to Master Coordinator, we would have no Members or Distributors let alone Sales Leaders.

If you want to have a Shaklee business – for sure if you want a Shaklee organization of Directors & Coordinators – you have to have people!  You have to have people who will “take a look”.  Before you have someone who is willing to “take a look” – you have to invite them!  Before you have anyone to give a presentation to, you have to invite them to “take a look”.  Before you will have anyone attend a meeting or a zoom call you have to invite them to “take a look”.

Inviting someone to “take a look” is the one thing you cannot avoid if you want a business.
One of the things Gary has likes about Richard Brooke’s presentations is that there are many times when he suggests there are some things you will have to figure out for yourself.  For example, Gary would probably not use those exact words, “Would you like to take a look?”.  He figured out that he was most comfortable asking someone, “Would you be willing to listen to an idea?”  Now, that’s not terribly different from “Would you like to take a look?” is it – but it worked for Gary.  Try a couple of simple variations until you find something comfortable for you.  The important point is to not turn it into a speech.

So, if you’re in the 90 Day Run program we hope you’re gaining confidence and experience finding and inviting new people – if you’re not – you can still get on board and start inviting people.  It’ll be fun when you start to get to know new people.   Then, little by little you will begin to have new people to work with in your business.

How to overcome doubt and fear

The following quote from Dale Carnegie is THE ANSWER to conquer fear.  Don't let its simplicity fool you into thinking it isn't accurate.

"Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy."

The future is now

I was reading a small booklet that I've had around the office for many years.  It's about the same stuff I've tried to communicate to you through these daily messages.  What you want to understand is this...There are not any secrets to building this business and there are not any secrets about earning more income than you need.   It's just plain old basic principles, concepts and ideas.

Here is the sentence that kind of grabbed me:
THE FUTURE SHAPES US. IT CARRIES MAJOR INFLUENCE OVER OUR BECOMING.

So the question that pops up in my mind is simple: what am I becoming?

What are you becoming?

If I read this correctly, what it is saying is that I should be investing some time in myself to get better in areas that will affect my future. In this business it means getting better at inviting, getting appointments, telling a simple Shaklee story. To keep this simple, it's about becoming more effective doing the most basic fundamentals of this business.

So, what are your thoughts about your future? If the future does hold influence over our becoming better, that means we have to be thinking about the future....here we go again - goals, targets, decisions.  I strongly believe that this Shaklee opportunity will be better than ever in the coming months and years for those people who truly are ready to invest in themselves and work hard for a few short years.

I read a book years ago that had the title.....The Future Is Now! It's something to think about.

Intentions are good but...

When I think back to when I got started my goal was to find out what was true about what I heard.  I had 4 questions:
1. Is it true about this company?
2. Is it true about these products?
3. Is it true about the system...network marketing?
4. Is it true that people are earning the kinds of numbers I was hearing?

I felt compelled to learn as much as possible to answer those questions because I knew a couple things. It sounded too good to be true....At the same time I was very inspired about the possibilities.  I went to every meeting, I listened, used the products, continued to be inspired by what I was learning and in about my 4th month my belief kicked in. I decided to set some goals and make it work.

Did I always do what I knew I should be doing? No! Did I have good intentions? Yes, every day I had thoughts and ideas but I wasn't always as active as I said I wanted to be. I knew I had to move my good intentions to productive activity. That was my challenge. The more I learned the more I was convinced this opportunity was special and I just didn't want to blow it off.

Most of you don't know me very well. I've always been what I call a back row guy. Kind of laid back and rather quiet. But my inner person wanted to make this thing work and I was making some effort, but not growing like some others were that I got to know. Darn! I wanted everything Shaklee offered.

I kept at it and when I reflect back a major key for our growth was simple...be consistent with my thinking and activity. I learned that I had to be willing to put myself in situations that were challenging and follow through on my intentions. I got it. Don't be afraid to be uncomfortable as that was a huge part for personal growth. So my message today is simple....If you truly want everything Shaklee offers, you must get to the point where you're willing to be uncomfortable for a while and start putting yourself in situations that are challenging.

Success doesn't just happen because we have a great company and awesome products.  Success takes place when individuals build their belief, accept challenges, follow through with those good intentions, and work hard. When you do this you'll get to the point eventually where others will call you lucky because you've made the right moves and built yourself an incredible future.

Stick to the basics

I personally believe there is going to be some excellent growth in the near future so I have a few questions and comments. I think the place to start is to understand that one of the most interesting things is that success always follows bumps in the road - that’s just how it is. For everyone. Nothing works perfectly on the journey for growth. Some people avoid failure by doing nothing, and of course that means nothing will happen.

The people who really want to move forward and work at building their business will face various road blocks on the road to growth. As long as the effort is consistent, over time the business will grow and success will be exciting. Everyone wants success. Everyone wants to learn. Everyone wants it to be easier. But no one wants to change! Kind of interesting isn’t it? So maybe we should ask ourselves a couple of questions.

Where do we go from here?
What do I have to change for my future to be what I want it to be?

I don’t have all the answers, but over the years Faye and I have asked ourselves questions. The answers would come in our conversations and those answers were the same as the last time we asked the same questions to ourselves. In other words, the keys for growth are the fundamentals. Most people who are reading this message know what the fundamentals are. Talking to people, asking questions, learning how to get appointments, giving presentations, following up, then doing those fundamentals time after time after time.

Some ideas for today

Here are a couple ideas for today that I found in my collection of ideas that at one time inspired me.   When I come across an idea that kind of jumps off the paper I usually save it for a rainy day. Today in Minnesota it is raining. Just enough that it makes me to hurry to get in the car.  So here is something for you to think about today:

The fastest way to learn is activity  -  DO IT!
The second fastest way to learn is to have a coach.

"Work as if your future depends on it – because it does."
Rick Pitino

“If you want your life to be different, you have to be willing to do something different first.”
Hal Elrod

How to make today different might mean to get an appointment or to sponsor someone. Maybe it’s doing something you wanted to do yesterday but didn’t get around to it.

Make today be an exciting day for yourself.

Gary Burke
