Happy new year! It's a choice to make it happen.

As 2016 is almost totally behind us, and it's time to decide if you want 2017 to be better than this past year. I think having a good, simple, definition of success is vital. Below is my favorite definition of success- it's from Harvey Mackay who is a highly successful business guy who lives in the Minneapolis area.
 
"My definition of success is having a predetermined plan, successfully carrying it out over a long period of time and having a good time doing it."
 
I want to break that down into three (3) points.
    
1. Have a predetermined plan.   This means to not just hope or wish this new year will be a success. Plan for it!

2.  Carry it out over a long period of time.   Carrying it out means to invest your time and effort in working at the basic fundamentals and be consistent with your efforts. Growth doesn't just happen.  You make it happen.

3. Have a good time doing it.  I can attest to the fact that when working at building this business it is in fact fun. It's always fun when we have new people coming into Shaklee and to see their excitement about the products and the idea that they can increase their income to whatever level they choose.

Here we go again

At this time of year many leaders are talking about goal achievement and what it takes to make goals become a reality.  The following is an excerpt from a article out of the Minneapolis paper by Harvey Mackay:

"Passion and persistence are at the top of the list of skills you need to excel.  If you don't have an intense, burning desire or what you are doing, there's no way you'll be able to work the long, hard hours it takes to become successful."

Growth is a choice

Well, here we are in the final week of 2016. Ending something also means it's time to start again, so a good question to ask ourselves might be, "Okay, did 2016 turn out like I hoped it would? Did I do what I wanted to do business wise?" Of course the most important question must be about the future. The past is exactly that. Past. Done. Over with. Let's be future driven and not live in the past.
 
The following principle is worth thinking about. Saying "Yes" to one thing always means saying "No" to something else.  
 
For 2017 I say "Yes" to the following two goals.

Intention or activity?

Here is another thought about the new year we will be facing in a few days: do you happen to have a list for yourself of what you intend to do in 2017?  What are your intentions or maybe I should ask, are you willing to do what it takes in 2017?
 
I would suggest you consider to sit down at some point after the Christmas season and make a list of what you intend to do.  Here are some questions you might consider answering:
- I will commit ______ hours every week working my business.
- My monthly PGPV goal is ___________.
- My monthly earnings will be _________.
- I will advance to ______________ rank in 2017.
    
Those questions are just the beginning.  You know where you have to improve yourself and/or your business so I suggest you think about it and ask yourself the right questions.
 
What comes to mind is something I read in a book a few years ago. It goes something like this: we judge ourselves by our intentions, but others judge us by our actions.

Life is like a cafeteria

Some people continue to wonder what it might take to get what they want. There aren't any secrets but there are many principles that can help a person understand what it's going to take. The following might help someone to understand what has to happen.

A friend's grandfather came to America from Eastern Europe. After being processed at Ellis Island, he went into a cafeteria in lower Manhattan. He sat down at an empty table and waited for someone to take his order.   
 
Of course nobody did. Finally, a woman with a tray full of food sat down opposite him and informed him how a cafeteria worked. "Start at that end," she said.  "Just go along the line and pick out what you want. At the other end , they'll tell you how much you have to pay."
 
"I soon learned that's how everything works in America," the grandfather told my friend. "Life's a cafeteria. You can get anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the price of learning. You can even get success, but you'll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it yourself."

Something to think about

I'm kind of pushing the pause button what just means I'm doing some thinking about this business and what's possible.   As always the good thing for 2017 is we get to start over. Maybe set new goals, commit to do the things that really count and be serious about doing what we're capable of doing.
 
For many it might be to double your efforts. Maybe to read more inspiring books. Maybe this new year will be your best year ever. Here's an idea: look at your business as it is today, December 13th and sit down and write your 2017 story in advance. This is about looking ahead and deciding on your future results in advance. Some will call this dreaming.  Why not?
 
This is a season of expectations so why not design your future in advance.  Dream. Open your mind to new ideas of growth for yourself and your business.   It's free to dream so THINK BIG.  Challenge yourself.   
 
All of us can do better than we did this past year. Think. Dream. Believe.

Who would have believed that Jim and I would be increasing our business... when 1 1/2 years ago, we weren't even attending meetings?
Now, here we are:
-Having meetings in our home twice a month
-Setting our monthly PV goal at 5200 when 1 1/2 years ago we were only trying to get to 3000 a month
-Thinking about Shaklee every day
-planning ahead
-weekly accountability call
-monthly sales flyers
Yep!  I'm thinking maybe... just maybe... we can have a future here!

The following excerpts were taken from an article in last Friday's Minneapolis sports section.
 
Paige and Hannah Tapp are twins who play volleyball for the U.of MN.  They admit that they didn't understand their true potential until arriving at the U.  Coach Hugh McCutcheon saw it all along. Early in their careers, he pushed the Tapps to expand their idea of what is possible, and in raising the bar for themselves, they lifted the entire program.
 
McCutcheon's goals and vision are so high they said. At first you don't think you can work that hard; you think there's no way you can sustain that every day. And then, you learn your limits are not your limits, and you see how much farther you can go.
 
Hannah and Paige were willing to do whatever the coaches suggested. They wanted to dream some big dreams and they were prepared to do the work. The sister's reshaped their thinking, freeing themselves from notions of what they could achieve.  
 
Hannah said, "During my first spring here, I thought I was working hard, but I had to redefine that.  I had to rewire my thinkng."  The sisters know now what is possible, as both have received All American honors.

"Hi handsome, my name is Rose"

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. 

I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.. 

She said, 'Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?' 

I laughed and enthusiastically responded, 'Of course you may!' and she gave me a giant squeeze.. 

'Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?' I asked. 

She jokingly replied, 'I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids...' 

'No seriously,' I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age. 

'I always dreamed of having a college education and now I'm getting one!' she told me. 

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. 

We became instant friends. Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this 'time machine' as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. 

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she revelled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up. 

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. 

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, 'I'm sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.' 

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, 'We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. 

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humour every day. You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. 

We have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know it! 

There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. 

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. 

Anybody! Can grow older. That doesn't take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets. 

The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets..' 

She concluded her speech by courageously singing 'The Rose.' 

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year's end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those months ago. 

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. 

Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never too late to be all you can possibly be. 

When you finish reading this, please send this peaceful word of advice to your friends and family, they'll really enjoy it! 

These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE. 

REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL. We make a Living by what we get. We make a Life by what we give. 

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

What is it you want to do?

At this time of the year I seem to think about how the year was regarding business and life in general. First of all I feel blessed because I feel very healthy. I go to the LifeTime club every morning, seven days a week to work out. I always feel better when I leave than when I arrived.  
 
We've had a great year for our business but I usually ask myself what I can do that might help this next year be better.  What I've always loved is the idea that it is up to me to make sure I do the right things to make the next year better in some areas.  
 
The toughest part of this business is we have to decide what we want to happen, then we need a simple plan, then it's a matter of getting ourselves in motion. I had a message a few days ago from someone that said most of us spend more time planning than doing what has to be done. I think that thought is right on the mark because I've experienced that myself many times. But eventually I get myself back in motion.
 
Here's a thought: we do what we have to do so we can do what we want to do.   Think about that. What is it you want to do? Make 2017 the year you did things that maybe you didn't want to do, so you can do what you want to do.

Do you work from a list?

One thing everyone does every day, every hour is we have what is called self-talk. It's also called thinking. We have hundreds of thoughts going through our minds all day long so it seems like this might be an important thing to pay attention to.   
 
We make decisions all the time about what we're going to do and what we want to have, where we're planning to go, and who we're going to talk to and whatever else might come to mind.
 
The point I want to try to make today is we want to make sure we don't talk ourselves out of succeeding in this business. I think it's fair to say that we talk ourselves into doing things and then we also talk ourselves our of doing things.  
 
I have learned that I achieve more when I make a list the night before the next day.  I can't say I do it 100% of the time, but I do know that making a list helps to remind me what I want to get done and I get more done when I have a list.   Simple isn't it?  
 
What's on your list for today and this week about what you want to accomplish in your business? Don't have a list? You might want to consider always working from a list.

Don't listen to the negative people

The following story came from author Harvey Mackay.  His new book is The Mackay MBA Of Selling In The Real World.
 
In his book The Man Who Listens to Horses, famed horse trainer Monty Roberts tells about the time one of his teachers in high school assigned a paper called “My Goals in Life.” The teacher, Mr. Fowler, was interested only in practical goals – not fantasies about going to Hollywood to become a movie star, and the like.  But young Monty had a serious dream.  The son of a horse trainer, he longed to own a thoroughbred racehorse facility.  Monty turned in a detailed plan to achieve his dream.
 
Mr. Fowler returned his paper with a failing grade.  “It’s a wild, unattainable dream,” he told the teen.  “I know your family and background; it would not be possible.”  He insisted Monty rewrite the paper.
 
The next day, after talking with his mother, Monty returned his original paper to Mr. Fowler.  He included a note saying he believed in his plan and the teacher shouldn’t limit his aspirations.  Mr. Fowler didn’t respond at the time, but Monty got an A in the course.
 
Monty ultimately achieved his dream through hard work and determination.  Many years later, he received a call from Mr. Fowler, who wanted to arrange a tour of Monty’s stables for his church group.
 
After the tour, Mr. Fowler told the group about the term paper and the note Monty had written.  “There was a time when I told Monty that this was unattainable,” he said.  “Now we’ve all had a good look around, and seen how he proved me wrong.”  His student, he said, had taught him “the most valuable lesson I ever learned.”

Yes you can!

I first started reading personal development books during my first year of teaching in about 1965. I forget which books I read first but I do remember reading the following quote by William James very early in the game.
 
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind."
 
It's these kind of quotes that just seemed to jump off the pages as I read them. I found many gems and just loved being inspired. Just think about what the above quote is saying about you and me. We can literally alter our lives by altering our attitudes.
 
How's your attitude about prospecting?  About sales? About leadership? About speaking in front of a group? About doubling your monthly PV? About increasing your income by $2000 a month in 2017? By altering your attitude you can literally change your life.
 
Would it be easy? No! Would it be worth it? Yes! Can you do it? Yes, if you make the decision to make it happen.
Yes you can!

The future is now! It's your choice.

The following is from the book Life Is Tremendous  by Charlie "Tremendous" Jones.
 
"You can teach someone how to do a task, but that doesn't assure his doing it.  But let him discover why and he'll learn how in spite of all obstacles."
 
I think that's a pretty strong statement. I know from experience that obstacles are going to be a part of anyone's future if they are planning on growing personally and growing their business. That's just the way it is. That's life.  
 
What obstacles are stopping you from doing what you're capable of doing?   Think about it. My guess is if you're reading this message, you want to make 2017 a year to really make things happen. I think the first step is to accept the idea that it's up to you how your new year is going to be. Only you can make that decision. 
 
The decision comes first, then comes the plan to make it happen.

How to improve your confidence

I was reading the Minneapolis paper's sports section and they had a terrific article about this player and how he changed from one season to the next.  This player said that after last year's season he decided not to take vacation time during the off season because he felt it was his time to really invest his time to work on his game.
 
The following is what he said happened when he was asked about his commitment to invest quality time improving his skills:
 "I found that zone where hard work and confidence meet."   
 
Of course when I read that simple quote I immediately thought of our business. If we want to improve our skills in building this business, it's all a matter of working hard because what happens when people work hard at something they care about things change.  
 
Do you want to improve your skills and become more confident with the idea you can literally double or triple your monthly PV (and of course that means you would probably also double or triple your income)? I believe it's true that when someone works extra hard, they put in more time working the fundamentals, they also will find that zone where hard work and confidence meet. Which also means it will change your business.
 
Faye and I are going to spend Thanksgiving with Rachel and family so 
I have decided to take this week off so I will not be sending any messages the rest of this week. Have a great Thanksgiving!

It's always a choice

Now that we've had a wonderful Thanksgiving we can look forward to making December a great month and get ourselves mentally ready for the new year. Some people seem to convince themselves that December is a slow month. Not true in my book because the month we qualified as Director with over 5000 PV was the month of December.
 
December is basically a reflection of your October and November efforts. If December is what we might call a slow month, it's because of what we did in October and November. So if you want to get 2017 off to a great start it's all a matter of what you do in November and December.
 
For 2017 to be a special year, it's all about choice. Will you be telling the Shaklee story at your appointments?  Are you planning on telling your story? Or is it "I hope" or "I will?" It's always a choice so give it some thought and make your decision about how you want your 2017 to be like.

Are you a balcony person?

I read a book years ago and I was reminded of it early this morning.  The name of the book is BALCONY PEOPLE by Joyce Landorff.  What Joyce says very simply is that everyone needs at least one or maybe even more balcony people in their life.
 
A balcony person is someone who no matter what happens they are up on a balcony of some kind cheering you on.  Just imagine standing on a basketball floor and when you look up there is a running track. Imagine looking up and what you see is many people cheering you to keep going forward, you're going to make it, we're behind you, we're with you, we love you.  
 
Then what Joyce says a few pages later is we have to be aware because there are also many what she calls basement people. These people are the ones who are trying to pull you down to their level.  They aren't positive, they make negative comments, they trying to convince you that you'll never reach your goals.  
 
Our job in this business is to be or to become a balcony person for every person in our business, plus every person we come in contact with. That's this business. Everyone needs someone who is a balcony person in their life.  Cheering them on. Encouraging them no matter what. Everyone!
 
Faye and Rachel are some of my balcony people and I feel incredibly fortunate to have other balcony people who also encourage me.
 
Think about it.

Let's keep our eyes on our goals

I heard the following on the radio yesterday. It's really very simple and certainly makes sense because one of the difficult things to do is to keep a focus on a project such as we have in this business. 
 
Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off your goal.
 
I personally feel there are two things that takes our eyes off the goal we're seeking.    Obstacles and various distractions are the culprits but the fact of the matter is, that's life. We all get distracted at times and we also have obstacles to fight. MI believe that the people who learn how to keep distractions to a minimum and mentally fight the various obstacles are the people who make progress on their goals.
 
Today is Monday and all of us just might face an obstacle or two and we might even get distracted. Let's do our best to not allow anything to stop us from having a terrific week.

Wishing won't make it so

Oh how I wish that quote was wrong. I wish we could grow faster. I wish I could lose 10 lbs. this week. I wish this business was easier. I wish I was a Key Coordinator. I wish I knew more people. I wish we would have more monthly income than bills to pay. I wish....
 
We should be thinking, "I'm going to have my best month ever. I will do whatever it takes to build this business. I believe that people need what Shaklee has to offer. I can sponsor 3 people a week." Etc.  
 
Building this business is about being a doer of the basic fundamentals and to do those fundamentals on a very consistent basis. That might be the secret for an incredible future.

It's about re-commitment

Here is a definition of commitment. I don't know the source but the idea of commitment has always been a major piece of the success puzzle for me. 
 
"Commitment is when the head moves the heart and the heart moves the feet."
 
I know that everyone faces times when they have to take some time to think through if they are going to continue their efforts in whatever dream they are chasing. Some people quit after their first obstacle, while others seem to stick with their decision no matter what happens.  One thing you can be assured of is that everyone faces times when things don't go as planned or takes three times longer to achieve.
 
What I have learned is that commitment doesn't start until a person faces a setback, has obstacles to overcome, or maybe has a tough problem to solve.  The truth of the matter is re-commitment is what takes place when things aren't going well. We all have to 
re-commitment several times if we are to continue the success we want.
 
It's the re-commitment that is the secret.   Think about it.

Simple but powerful principles

Today I am going to copy a couple of what I call principles. I don't know what or who the source is for writing this but I found it in my notes from a few years ago.
 
Everyone experiences a battle with themselves. We all have thoughts that are negative and full of doubt at times.  The people who succeeds the most are the people who fight and win that internal battle.
 
This business rewards steady, continuous effort far more than short bursts of passion. Being consistent with attitude and effort is a major key for succeeding.
 
This last one is one that usually makes me think about my attitude. People choose their attitudes. How's your attitude about disappointments, setbacks, prospecting, selling, getting appointments and of course sponsoring?
 
Think about it.

Finishing strong is a great goal

November is here and the question is, what are your goals for this month? Do you have a plan for making November a special month for seeing growth, or will it be the same as October?
 
Here is another simple statement that I found years ago that always made me think. Do you reduce your goals to meet your income, or increase your income to meet your goals?  
 
I know it probably seems like these messages are always about having goals, growth, increasing effort, etc. But if we don't have a new goal the chances are pretty good that we will just repeat the old ones.

Last year will look like the year before.
This year will be like last year.
Next year will be like this year.
 
We are closing out 2016 in the next two months, November and December. Starting out the new year always create lots of talk about new year resolutions and what should we do in this new year? 
 
Why not get a running start and since results usually follow effort by 30 to 90 days, this means that your November and December efforts will probably show in January and February. That my friend is how you start the new year off with exciting results.

Growing this business is about one word

There is nothing magical about making the process work for building a highly successful Shaklee business.   It's about one word. Repetition.  The following is a definition of repetition.
 
Repetition is the action of repeating something that has already been done, said or written. 
 
How many people have you talked to about our products? How many times have you talked to them? How many appointments have you had with one person to talk about the Shaklee opportunity? How many meetings have you attended in the past 30 days? Better yet, how many meetings have you comducted in the past 30 days?
 
The more you do one thing many times, the more skill you will have developed doing that activity. After you've done 10 or 30 appointments, you will have more confidence and will have become more skilled.    
 
If there is no activity, there will be no growth. I'm sure you get the idea. Think about it.

It's about belief

One thing that makes such a difference in how we work and act is our belief.  So much depends on what we believe.  The following is a terrific principle I found years ago.  

This business is not about who believes the most, it's about those who believe the longest.
 
Of course we have to believe in ourselves but when difficult situations come up are we mentally tough enough to keep on keeping on or do we allow doubt to stop us and challenge our belief?
 
This goes for the products, the compensation and everything else that is meaningful about making this business work. How we maintain our belief for weeks, months, years and decades depends on what we read, who we listen to and who we spend time with.
 
I personally believe it's a choice. Every one of us is responsible to make choices that can literally guarantee our belief, which of course will help in building the kind of life you really want.

Don't limit yourself

Here is another simple fact about this great business that all of us are involved in.  If this is accurate and you want a growing business then your choice of what to work on is very clear.
 
What you can do as an individual is limited......what you can do through duplication is unlimited.
 
What I heard at the meetings I attended here in the Minneapolis area in the beginning was to understand the idea is to continually duplicate yourself. That was taught, talked about, then repeated over and over so it was hard to not develop the belief that we should be sponsoring others and teaching them to do the same thing.....If they want a growing business.
 
Think about this and look at the numbers of people that are coming into your organization or have come into it over the past year or so. Remember, you want to have unlimited numbers of people coming into your organization. Talk about it. Teach it. Remember the principal that says, what you talk about you will bring about.

Four ways to build this business

Many times I get asked about building and growing this business. I don't have any special answers but I do believe this is a simple business that is not always easy. In my view, if someone is looking for easy this probably isn't for them. On the other hand if someone is looking for an opportunity that literally changes lives in many ways I would suggest they take some time and get a good understanding of this business.
 
The following are four ways to consider working at this business. I believe these ideas came from Al Strauss.
 
Four Ways To Grow Your Business
 
1.)  Sell existing products / services to existing members.
 
2.)  Sell new products / services to existing members.
 
3.)  Sell existing products / services to new members.
 
4.)  Find new people to do 1,2,3.
 
Where is your focus?  Guess where my focus has been all these years.
My focus has been on #4 but also doing 1,2,3.

Simplicity was important to me

I've been going through some of my notes from past years and am coming across many thoughts, ideas and words that I either heard or wrote myself. Today I came across the following.  
 
This is about approaching people and approaching people came down to three words for me.
 
WHY? WHAT? WHO? 
The following is very simple but this is what I would say once I got into a conversation:
WHY I got involved was because I was looking for a new future.
WHAT happened since is this opportunity has given us a terrific future.
WHO I am looking for are success oriented people who have a strong desire to earn $30,000 to $200,000 a year working from home. I'm looking for someone who wants to build a great future, not just to sell a product.
 
I used that many times when talking with people and it made it easy for me because it is so simple. I learned very early in this business that simplicity attracts and complexity impresses. I have believed for many years that my job as I see it is not to impress people, but to attract them to an idea.

A great principle

Over the years I have gathered various principles from books, articles, and of course from having the opportunity to listen to many presentations from Shaklee leaders. The following principle is one of my favorites.

Without the belief that you can build a wonderful Shaklee business, you won't have the inner motivation to stick with it when progress is slow.
 
Read the above again, slowly. That principle is suggesting that our belief is what we want to make sure we continually work on so we can make progress. You might be asking yourself, how do we build belief? Who do you listen to? What are you currently reading?  How many meetings do you attend or conduct every week? Are you using the products consistently?
 
I don't listen to negative people or people who constantly talk doubt. There are some people who feel it is their job to criticize others and  try to discourage people who are working to change their future. I try to do my best to stay away from those people.

There are lessons to be learned

Terry Slattery who has been a long time Shaklee sales leader introduced me to a friend of his who is a top sales trainer. I met Terry's friend named Al Strauss a few years ago and the following comments are notes I took that day we met at Terry's home.
 
"You can build your business the hard way or the smart way. 

THE HARD WAY - No mentor.  Do it yourself. If you are always trying to figure it out yourself, you'll be doing things you could avoid.
 
THE SMART WAY - Have a mentor - Someone who has done what you want to do."
 
"Teach people to go through the numbers." 

What Al is saying is people must learn how to fail. Everyone fails in the early times. It's hard to find people who are motivated to fail, but everyone is willing to learn some lessons. Be determined to learn lessons.

How to guarantee your success

The following is something I heard Jim Rohn say many years ago and I personally believe that when a person develops the following 4 habits, they can't help but become successful.

Develop 4 habits that will unquestionably guarantee your success.
1.  Show up on time.
2.  Always do what you say you're going to do.
3.  Finish what you start.
4.  Always say "Please" and "Thank you."

Think about those 4 simple steps. I don't think I have to say anything else.
