It's a struggle today

I'm kind of struggling this morning thinking about getting myself going. I feel lazy and am thinking about doing it tomorrow.  Doing what you might ask? Thinking of a word or an idea for a message. All I usually need is a word, so I take some time looking through books I've read, or thinking about what have I done in the past when I just don't feel like doing much.

As I sit here and think what comes to my mind is the idea that our job is to figure out how to keep ourselves in motion and it isn't always easy. I've read a couple books over the past few years on writing because I really don't view myself as a writer.  What I recall from one of the books is this: if you want to be a writer, start writing. Just sit and write something. So far that's exactly what I've been doing and some good thoughts are coming. I am sitting here kind of chuckling to myself thinking whoever reads this probably thinks I'm a real do-do.

But you know what? I'm getting ideas!  The same is true in the past when I would get like this, thoughts and ideas pop into my head.  Listen: if you want to prospect, go call someone. Don't think about it. Just do it. It's like if you want to write just sit down and write. If you need higher PV for June, go right now and start calling people who you know love these products. Don't just sit around and do nothing. Just start doing what you know you want to do. Don't even finish reading this message. Right now, start making calls.

Whew!  All that and I think I've got a message here. Have a nice day. Do something!

Accountability

Working from a plan of some sort has always made sense to me. It helps to clarify what's important and what the steps are for making consistent progress.  There have been times when I would spend lots of time "getting ready." I did this numerous of times - getting ready that is. This morning I was looking through some old notes from various meetings I've attended and I came across the following:
"'Getting ready' often gives a person the feeling of progress, but it's usually a delaying tactic that gets in the way of growth...."
I wrote a note to myself in my notes:
"Stop getting ready and get with it."

I got pretty good at thinking I was working the business by doing things that got in the way and allowed me to delay doing the right things for growth.    I found it wasn't always easy to get myself going in the right direction. I'm sure many of you can relate - it's easy to get caught in that trap. In this business we are the CEO. You are the CEO of your business and your life as I am of mine. I learned that the reason I would find myself doing nothing but thinking I was making progress was because I was the CEO and I wasn't accountable to anyone except myself.

Being isolated and not having someone off whom to bounce ideas is deadly. The biggest challenge we have in this business is getting ourselves going and doing the right things. For that reason, it's a good idea to have someone to talk with - an accountability partner - about what is happening. Find someone you can talk with, someone who does not or will not criticize. Give your conversation a time frame (and I say this from experience because if you don't have a time limit it's easy to get sidetracked talking about what doesn't work or what isn't working). Having an accountability partner isn't for complaining. It's for getting yourself thinking and doing the right things. It will help you to keep your dream alive as well as challenging yourself to start doing what you know has to be done. Think about it.

Your belief matters

Last Sunday I heard a great message about belief. It struck me that this message applies to all areas of life, including business. When I got started, I wanted to learn as much about this opportunity as I could. I wasn't about to get involved in something I didn't believe in. When I attended meetings here in the Minneapolis area one of the major influences we had was the belief and accomplishments of the leaders in the area. By doing the meetings the leaders were transferring their belief and what I learned from that is people will believe what you believe.

My belief grew because I challenged the cleaning products.  It didn't take long for that belief to become a part of me because I used those products every day. I had zero belief in nutrition in the beginning simply because my belief was I didn't need that stuff and I had no interest in using it. In the third month, I started Vita Lea and Protein and to make a long story short, by the third week I could tell the difference. My belief changed and my income ballooned after those products worked for me because I now had the belief to go and talk to people.

Then of course I also met people and heard people speak about the incomes they and others were earning.

Then my thinking became, "why not me?" I had belief in the products and the compensation plan. So the point today is the obvious: my belief matters. Your belief matters. When there is belief things can change mighty fast.
- Know what you believe
- Know why you believe it
- Let your life reflect what you believe

How's your belief in the products?   How's your belief in the comp plan?  How's you belief in the market all across this country there are people who need what Shaklee offers. Finally, are your actions a reflection of your belief?

The most important belief for you is that you have unwavering belief in yourself.   As was said in a earlier message last week, you are better than you think you are, and you can do more than you think you can.

It's never too late

In yesterday's newspaper there was a great article about an 89 year old man who finally got his high school diploma.  He talked about how important it was to him and how pleased he was to have that diploma.

Isn't that a great example of not giving up but doing what had to be done to earn that recognition? After all those years he finally finished what he started many, many years earlier.

Here is the point for me and I hope for you: it's never to late to finish what you start. Every once in a while I get the question like, "Why do you keep on working this business?" I only have one answer to that type of question: I truly enjoy doing what I do and I love this business; I'm not finished. I have actually said that many, many times. I just don't feel like it's over.

I grew up in a single parent home in the 1940s and 50s. My mom was a tough lady and very smart. She had three boys and one girl and in those years it was unusual to be a single mother of four kids. My mother was our model for the kind of people she wanted us kids to be.   What we kids heard in our home over and over and over was be polite, be on time, if you tell someone you will do something, make sure you do it, if you start something, finish it.

Did you begin this business with a dream in your mind about what you could become and what you could have?  Have you reached that dream?  If you have not reached what would be your dream, is that dream still alive in your mind and heart? Finish! Don't allow that dream to be idle just because of obstacles and setbacks. Finish! Don't compare yourself with anyone else, just be the very best you can be. Finish!

It's never too late to finish.

It's about winning the battle

Here we are in the last week of June. Have you checked your current PV for June as of today, June 23rd? I hope you are planning on June being a better month than May was. Having targets, goals or plans makes it much easier to grow. Many people I talk with seem to be just "doing" Shaklee; it's tough to grow if there isn't the effort behind the mindset of having a target to shoot for.

So what's this business really about? It's about our mindset. The thinking must be "I want to get better as a leader and I will have monthly growth in our personal group PV." I heard the following comment on the radio a couple weeks ago and I want to share it with you:

"You're better than you think you are, and can do more than you think you can."

Read that a couple times. Think about it.  How do you view yourself and your efforts? I probably don't know many of you who will read this message but I know about you because for one thing, you're reading this. You are interested in doing more. Doing better. Getting better.   What might be holding you back from becoming what you're very capable of becoming? We all can do better - me, you, everyone.

I learned quite early in the business that doubt has a way of showing up in my mind. Someone was telling me what I couldn't do and how crazy I was for being in this business. I hated those conversations about doubt but I learned that it was my responsibility to fight back any and every doubtful thought that somehow found it's way into my thinking.   You can win this battle. It's ongoing so you can't just win one time. It's your job to make your life what you want it to  be.    Make June your best month of the year.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke

Willingness to learn is a key factor

I first subscribed to Success magazine over 40 years ago. Reading good material has been one of my main ways for self improvement. I read the following comment years ago and it had a positive effect on me: "Readers aren't always leaders, but leaders are always readers."

There is an article in this month's issue titled "High-Flying Entrepreneur." The following is an excerpt from the article:  "With any new venture, he says it's important not to limit yourself by thinking you have to have all the answers at first; you learn and grow as you go. I would challenge people to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. It is then when extraordinary things can happen."

The words I've underlined struck me as I read this article - "it's important not to limit yourself." This happens in Shaklee all the time. I hear people talk about what they can't do. 'I don't have time, don't know many people, I can't sell, no one comes to my meetings, I've never done this type of thing before.' On and on it can go. The point is that for the most part people seem to limit themselves by continually talking about what they don't have or can't do.

It's a fact that you don't have to know everything before you get started. If you truly want things to change for the positive for yourself, start talking positively to yourself about what you're going to do and how you're willing to learn as you go. Think about this over the weekend.

The fundamentals and becoming skilled

I want to make this message a follow-up of the message on Tuesday which mentioned the fundamentals, but didn't comment on what they are. A "fundamental" is defined as: a basic principle that serves as the groundwork of a system; a foundation; the primary source. (Source: dictionary.com)

What this says to me is that if we want to build this business it is essential that we understand what the fundamentals are, then make a decision that we are going to work hard at becoming as good as we possibly can at applying these fundamentals. I can assure you that the people you know in this business who have done well are people who have become very skilled in the basics of this business. If you happen to be looking for the "secret" for growing yourself as well as your future in this business, becoming skilled is it.

Let me add this thought: when I came in this business in 1970 I can assure you I didn't have the skills that are needed to build and grow. But I had a good attitude about learning. I have many times that the first year or two you are in this business it is an attitude business. It becomes a skill-based business after those first couple years.

The fundamentals:
- Asking questions
- Listening
- Getting appointments
- Giving presentations (lots of presentations)
- Following up
- Following up again
- Doing in-home meetings
- Being the example
- Doing more meetings
- Setting the pace

You can add more fundamentals to the above list. Think about this: once you decide to become highly skilled in these areas, then you keep that attitude by working hard and learn the many lessons you will encounter (lessons are small failures). I guarantee you will become skilled and you and your future will be a great example for your team.

A success story: Erin Branscom

Erin is under Bonnie Donahue and has a great story and it will be worth your time to read it. Erin has two first level Directors and two second level Directors. Congratulations Erin, you're a great role model.

Gary Burke
I’ve helped over 40 moms live The Shaklee Effect™
Erin Branscom (Senior Coordinator, KS)Erin Branscom

Since joining Shaklee Erin has lost 40 lbs.,* paid off $39K in debt and traded in a high-stress career to be home with her children. Now she's helping other moms experience their own Shaklee Effect.

I dreamt of being a stay-at-home mom
I am a wife and mother of three Shaklee babies -- Kameron 11, Ethan 10, and Audrey 5. Before going full-time in Shaklee, I worked in law enforcement with troubled youth. I worked 12 hour night shifts and almost 60+ hours a week in my job and did Shaklee on the side. I used to get up early and sacrifice sleep to call my team and work my business. I was exhausted and drained. I dreamed of being a stay at home mom. I remember crying and praying to be at home with my kids. I desperately wanted to become a Mom who was fully present in my children's lives. I felt like my kids were getting cheated. They had an exhausted Mom who was always too tired to play with them. My husband made a deal with me. If I could pay off 39k worth of our debt, then I could work from home doing Shaklee.

It took us 13 months, but we did it! We paid off the debt and for over two years now I have been at home with my kids working Shaklee part time and getting paid a full time income. I make as much now as I did in my job in law enforcement.

Shaklee has changed my family
I feel like I am a completely different person after beginning my Shaklee journey. I am a huge believer in personal development. It is so difficult to grow without personal and professional development. I have invested in myself with training, travel to Shaklee Regional and Global conferences, and by always learning. I am also always encouraging my team to do the same and grow. Shaklee has changed my family. We are now able to travel together, and spend more time together.

This year we decided to homeschool one of our children. Working from home part time allowed me to be able to do that. My son got everything he needed education wise and I still was able to work. My son also got to learn a lot more about Shaklee, watching me work. We spent over three months this year learning about the Mayan culture. We are on track to double qualify so that we can take my son to Mexico this year on the Dream incentive trip and actually see the Mayan culture firsthand. What a treat!

And, we have a Shaklee car! I travel so much to see my team. Having a Shaklee car to do that has been so fun! My kids named it 'Shaklee' and now they think that every white Chevy Cruze® we see is a "Shaklee!" I also have lost over 40 pounds* on Shaklee 180®. Before Shaklee 180®, I parented from the couch. I didn't play with my kids and I was not a very active person at all. Now I am training for my first Triathlon this August right after Long Beach! I am training and using Shaklee 180 and feel better than I ever have!

From the trips, to the car and most of all better health -- we are so grateful for this Shaklee lifestyle!

Coaching and mentoring other moms to work from home
Now my passion is helping other moms. So far, I have helped over 40 moms be able to earn an income from home while being fully present in their children's lives. What a gift!

One of my distributors has a disabled son. She was able to work her Shaklee business part time and be home for her son. She has also been able to use her Shaklee income to pay for a special wheel chair van for her son.

Being able to work from home and be at home with your kids is an incredible feeling. I love coaching and mentoring other moms and seeing them be able to take care of their families' right from home. Thanks Shaklee!

*Results and experiences from the Shaklee 180 Program are unique for each person, so results may vary. People following the weight loss portion of the Shaklee 180 can expect to lose 1-2 pounds a week.

It's simple but not always easy

When I was becoming committed to the business there were two sets of things I felt I needed to help me move in the right direction.

The first set of things I needed were the fundamentals for building this business.  Fortunately for me, here in the Minneapolis area there were great role models to learn from. I recall listening, taking notes, and trying to capture the nuggets that these leaders were teaching. Week after week I did this.  Then I would look over the notes and all the top people were doing the same things. AHA! The fundamentals. It didn't take long to figure out what had to be done. Here we are decades later and there are no new fundamentals. The fundamentals are the same. What has changed is what we use and how the fundamentals are accomplished.

The next thing I felt I needed was a strategy of some kind to help me stay on track and not allow distractions to get me off track. My strategy was simple. Work the fundamentals. Do lots of in-home meetings and develop two first level Directors every year. What I heard at some meetings was if a person would develop two Directors a year and they did this for a few short years they would have the foundation for financial security.   We developed 16 first level leaders in 8 years. They were right. The same holds true today.

If I were starting today, I would develop 3 new first level Directors a year for a minimum of 4 to 5 years. That would give me 12 to 15 first level Directors and that would be my foundation for financial security. That in a nutshell are the two things I felt I needed: fundamentals and a strategy. I saw it working for other people and I knew it would also work for me once I developed the proper skills. What is your strategy and are you working at the basic fundamentals of this business?

Make this a great week

Last Friday I sent a message that I feel could be the most meaningful principle that can help someone to literally guarantee their progress which of course leads to success in anything they choose to work at.

"You will always grow to the things you commit to."

I suggested you might want to save this and look at it every day until it becomes a part of your daily process. I attended a seminar a few months ago and the entire day was directed at the idea that distractions are probably the biggest obstacle everyone faces.

What pulls you away from doing what it is you want to do?

Do you find yourself starting and stopping doing the things you want to do?

What do you have planned for doing this week?

The statement above says growth follows commitment.  It also says that "you will always...." Just think about that for a couple minutes. You will always be able to grow yourself and your business as long as you don't allow distractions to lure you away from doing what you want to be doing. Don't allow anything to stop you from making progress today and the rest of this week. Have a great growth week.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke

A powerful idea

I was listening to a CD as I was driving through Wisconsin a couple days ago and I heard this lady make a statement that is worthwhile to anyone who truly has a desire to grow in various areas of business or life.  All I know is her name is Artemis.

Here is what I heard:  "You will always grow to the things you commit to."

I would suggest you stop right here and read that comment slowly to yourself and then think about it. Better yet, get in a discussion with someone in your team and talk about it. I think that once a person buys-in to this kind of a principle or idea, their chances for making progress in business or in life goes up dramatically.

I would also suggest this powerful principle become a part of your training for all people in your downline.

Are your prospecting skills growing?
Are you committed to become better in prospecting?
How is your sponsoring going?
Are you committed to improvement in this area?
Is your personal group PV where you want it?
If not, why not commit to doubling your PV?
Are you earning what you want to be earning from your Shaklee business?
Are you planning on attending the Long Beach conference?
Are you committed to being there?

I think you get the idea. This is one of the simplest and most powerful ideas / principles I've ever come across.

What do you think?

If you GO, you'll probably GROW

The future is exciting when you have an opportunity in your hands and mind that you know has huge potential to make a difference. In May 1970 I first heard about Shaklee Corporation and saw and heard a simple presentation of the opportunity that was being offered. I decided to invest some time and look into this opportunity.

I was sponsored that first day, purchased a couple cleaning products, and this new Shaklee guy in my life told me about his regular weekly meeting on Thursday nights. I was curious. I was also inspired mainly because I've always been kind of a dreamer. I never missed a meeting at his home. I then learned there was also a meeting on Monday nights by a local Master Coordinator team. To make a long story short, I can't imagine where I would be today if it weren't for those meetings.

Fast forward to today.  I learned that if I were to make this business work I was going to have to invest in myself - invest my time, my money and my effort. This is not a job. This is an opportunity. In order to take full advantage of opportunity it is very important to accept the idea to invest in yourself.

I was in a conversation yesterday morning at Sarah Hein's home with her friends from Colorado, Andrew and Janelle Devlin. (sp?)  What I heard Andrew say is that they didn't attend the annual Shaklee conference for five consecutive years. They attended that Wash. D.C. conference, heard about a trip to Kenya...wondered if they could do that.....they did it and went to Kenya.   Here is the point: When they didn't go, they didn't grow. When they started to go, their growth followed.

It's not to late to get registered for Long Beach.  It's your investment in yourself.  I can assure you that when you go to Long Beach you won't be disappointed. You'll be excited. You'll keep your dream alive.  You will now have a better chance to grow yourself and your business. Make the decision. Why? Because that's what leaders do.

Try it because...

The more I learn about what it takes to make progress and succeed at something, the more convinced I am that what we should be doing making sure we understand the word "failure," then going out, working really hard and welcoming all failures because that is the road to progress.

I received the following e-mail from Merle Girnun about three weeks ago regarding failure:
"I am wanting to spend 80% of my time prospecting.
I want to do as much as possible as I want to fail in a hurry and get it out of the way, so I can get to what works."

Isn't that a great attitude? I might also say that I spoke with Merle about an hour ago and she is making great progress.  Positive progress. I have sent several messages regarding failure mainly because it's something so many people try to avoid.  It's just the opposite and Merle is saying exactly that in her statement above.

A few comments concerning failure:
- Successful people always have many failures in their lives.
- Only those who never try never fail.
- People with no failures also have no victories.

I think you get the point. I've found those simple quotes over the years in various books. As you can probably tell, I save comments like that and I have found  they are very accurate. Why not be the example for your team and go out and have more failure this week? You'll learn a lot as you experience it. You'll also have stories of the successes you had. Since we know we can't avoid it, why not welcome it and get ready for all the successful stories you will have for your meetings. THINK ABOUT IT.

Investing in yourself

I want to talk a little about investing in yourself. I learned somewhere that the reason I should invest in myself is because no one else is as interested in me as me. I think the same goes for you.  The reason you should make it a point to invest in yourself is because no other person will do it for you. The investment could be translated into growth, progress, moving forward, or very simply success at a higher level.

Each of us is the one who has to decide what's important in our lives. If we don't take the bull by the horns and decide what's important to us, we will probably be doing things or working at something that is important to someone else. We can increase our probability for succeeding by being decisive, focused and taking action every day. Just doing something positive every day will make a difference.

The following is from the book An Enemy Called Average by John Mason.

"The greater the degree of wishful thinking, the greater degree of mediocrity."

Investing in yourself can be very simple.  Start your personal library. Buy a book and read a chapter every day.  Send yourself a positive note...hey, why not?   Plan a meeting. Do the meeting because now you're in charge. Make that phone call you meant to make last week. As it says above, wishful thinking isn't going to get the job done. A major investment in yourself is making the decision to be in Long Beach, CA at the annual Shaklee conference. This is one investment in yourself you want to make every year.  It is vital you be there if you have the dream of growing yourself and your business to higher levels.

Attract people through simplicity

I learned very early that a major activity for growing this business was giving presentations. Another way of saying that is I learned how to tell the Shaklee story  in a very simple way. In the beginning my presentations were about telling someone everything I knew...lots of details. That would take about 90 minutes. As time went by and I listened to other leaders give a presentation, I figured out that the presentations I liked the best and taught me the most were those without many details.

Faye and I would go to an appointment together in the early days and I would give the presentation. As we like to say today, Faye's job was to interrupt. I must say that she always had something good to add. On the way home in the car we would discuss the night. What was okay and what didn't seem necessary to talk about. We had that same discussion after every presentation and I learned to respect Faye's view in what seemed good and then those discussions lead to making changes and getting it simplified.

Gradually I learned that what I wanted to learn to do was to have a very simple presentation because I learned that simplicity attracts and complexity impresses. I decided that I wanted to attract people to the idea of what this business was about.  I rejected complexity (which means all the details) at the first appointment. The comment I am always grateful for is when someone tells me "you make it seem so simple."    That is because to me this is a very simple business. Not always easy but very simple.

Are you giving weekly presentations? If you're not, how can you get better? If you are giving regular presentations my guess is you're enjoying the business and you've gotten better and better over time.

You might want to keep that principle in mind: simplicity attracts and complexity impresses, and our job is to attract people to the idea of Shaklee, not to impress them. Maybe it should be said that the simpler you make it the more impressed people might be.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke

Be connected

There are so many principles, stories, examples, books and seminars that focus on what it takes to succeed.  I'm always kind of amazed when I find a book and the author has a new way to teach and explain to people how to make progress and succeed. There are no secrets for succeeding although some say they have a "secret." What they are really saying is that they discovered a process and they encountered all kinds of adversities but they hung in there, improved their process and worked hard.  The result was they experienced success at a high level.

For me it is about staying connected to good, positive ideas from people that have taken risks and made something work for them. I just had a conversation this morning on the phone and we were talking about the importance of staying connected. Staying connected in this business means you go to meetings, conduct your own meetings so those in your downline can stay connected, join in on webinars, read good material, attend local events and regional meetings.  Never, never miss the annual Shaklee conference that this year is in Long Beach, CA in August.

Now think about this for a minute. Let's say a person decides to ignore all of the things to do to stay connected. What will happen is no secret. Attitudes change, dreams are lost, negativity in some cases start taking place, etc. My view is once you know there are meetings, etc available and you may find yourself thinking, "I've heard all that before."   That is a clue that if you want to make this business work for yourself, you will get to the meetings.

It is each person's responsibility to choose to stay connected in some way.  I can't imagine that I would have stuck with this business if I had decided to just do it my own way and ignore the things that were available to me to meet successful people and to learn about the business. Do you still have a dream that is alive in your heart? Do you want this business to work for you better than it has? Don't allow yourself to be disconnected. Stick with it. The business is fun when we're working at it.

Gary Burke

A Jim Rohn Classic

Greetings,

Here is a Jim Rohn classic. This is the kind of message to read slowly and think so you get the full meaning. You also might want to save this and read it on a regular basis. It will take less than two minutes to read - and is worth it.

Gary Burke

Personal Philosophy is Like the Set of the Sail

by Jim Rohn
In the process of living, the winds of circumstances blow on us all in an unending flow that touches each of our lives.

We have all experienced the blowing winds of disappointment, despair and heartbreak. Why, then, would each of us, in our own individual ship of life, all beginning at the same point, with the same intended destination in mind, arrive at such different places at the end of the journey? Have we not all been blown by the winds of circumstances and buffeted by the turbulent storms of discontent?

What guides us to different destinations in life is determined by the way we have chosen to set our sail. The way that each of us thinks makes the major difference in where each of us arrive. The major difference is the set of the sail.

The same circumstances happen to us all. We have disappointments and challenges. We all have reversals and those moments when, in spite of our best plans and efforts, things just seem to fall apart. Challenging circumstances are not events reserved for the poor, the uneducated or the destitute. The rich and the poor have the same challenges that can lead to financial ruin and personal despair. In the final analysis, it is not what happens that determines the quality of our lives—it is what we choose to do when we have struggled to set the sail and then discover, after all of our efforts, that the wind has changed directions.

When the winds change, we must change. We must struggle to our feet once more and reset the sail in the manner that will steer us toward the destination of our own deliberate choosing. The set of the sail, how we think and how we respond, has a far greater capacity to destroy our lives than any challenges we face. How quickly and responsibly we react to adversity is far more important than the adversity itself. Once we discipline ourselves to understand this, we will finally and willingly conclude that the great challenge of life is to control the process of our thinking.

Working with intention

It's June! What are your targets for this month? Do you have a simple plan that will guide you to a great month if you follow it? I know...there are graduations, confirmations, kids out of school, various camps to attend.

It's a busy month and of course it is every year. That is why having a plan to follow will help to overcome distractions.

A plan is very simply a method for proceeding to help make progress. It's a blueprint, a road map, a game plan, a path. Working with intention is very different than "doing Shaklee." To keep it simple I have always tried to break it down into a couple things.

1.  What am I going to do?

2.  How often will I do it?

Talk to people - How many - frequency
- Appointments  -  tell the Shaklee story
- Follow-up
- Sponsor new people - consistency
- Meetings

People who make progress and become successful on a consistent basis say "YES" to their goals and plans, and are guided by their focus and not their feelings. As has been said many times, this business is actually very simple.   When you look at the list above it is telling us what our job is in order to make that consistent progress. THINK ABOUT IT!

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke
