Are you ready and willing?

A couple of days ago I sent you a message from a little booklet I have from UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. I think I would call this little booklet "A Guide for Your Personal Development."   Coach Wooden calls it his Success Playbook. I'm going to lift a couple excerpts from this one small section where coach Wooden is talking about skill.

Skill is knowing what to do and being able to execute all of the fundamentals important to a particular task. Any measure of competency requires a command of the fundamentals of a given endeavor. Even a person with limited competency can become at least somewhat skillful if he or she works on the fundamentals.

I remember when I got started and was trying to do my best doing the basic fundamentals for building this business. I felt nervous and very incompetent with what I was trying to do. I wasn't sure of myself but at the same time I knew that as long as I kept working I would get better. I have seen so many high potential people who just weren't willing to work at the fundamentals. Very sad to me.

You've got to give yourself some slack and start doing things you might not be very good at today. All I can say is I promise that you will get better and some people who don't understand what you went through to develop the skills will call you lucky.

The fundamentals for our business are:  Asking questions
Being a good listener
Getting appointments
Giving simple presentations of the products/earning opportunity
Conducting small group meetings
Sponsoring people
Following up
Teaching
Becoming a leader

It's up to you to make a decision that you're going to become very skillful at the basic fundamentals.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke
