I was driving back from our lake place yesterday afternoon and heard a guy on the radio talk about how he chose to do what he does for a living. Some of the things he talked about were his fears, little confidence, and doubts were probably his biggest challenges. He then proceeded to talk about the one thing he had going for himself and that was his determination. His point was this one positive helped him overcome the negative issues and he went on to build a massive business.
Of course that got me to thinking about our business and the idea that when someone hears an idea and then starts to take steps to make that idea work, it always seems harder in the beginning. Of course this is normal because any time a person starts something with no experience there are always doubts and for many of us certain fears.
I was a boy scout for a short period of time in my youth. I couldn't tie knots very well but I do remember the boy scout motto: BE PREPARED. I don't know why but that stuck with me and I've learned over the years that preparation helps give a person confidence. The following is a quote I read in SUCCESS magazine: "Polish comes from practice, but charisma comes from certainty." Knowing that you are prepared to do something, especially if it's the first time you've ever done it, that preparation helps with building that confidence.
Practice is the biggest non-secret in Shaklee. Practice asking questions, getting an appointment, giving a simple product or opportunity presentation. I remember sitting in the basement of our first home giving a opportunity presentation to someone who wasn't there....I was practicing. I did that several times and this one day as I was in the middle of my practice session Faye came home. I heard the door slam shut and immediately felt embarrassed. I didn't want Faye to ask me who I was talking to. I hustled to stop and look busy. I also remember the first time I recorded myself giving a presentation. UGH! When I listened to myself I was thrilled that no one else would ever hear that presentation.
Preparation is what helps to beat fear. Practice. Work at it. Don't worry if you aren't impressed with yourself, you will get better and better as long as you practice. You will gain confidence as you continue to do the right things. You can't get better in this business by avoiding doing the right things.
Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke
