Step across the line in the sand

When I think back about what we did to build our business I keep getting reminded of the fact that I didn't feel I had the skills it would take to build. But when I went to meetings I always got encouraged as I heard the simple opportunity presentation of the kind of future a person could have. I wanted that future, but in order to get that kind of future I was going to have to step across the line in the sand and take some risks.

For me it wasn't easy as I had never done this type of work before. My bet would be that most of the people who read this message also didn't have the skills when they got started. For most of us, it was either take the risk at whatever was holding us back, or just wish our life away and hope that something magical might happen.

It was a risk to talk to someone about the business. "What if they ask questions?"  What if they say "No?" It was also a risk to make calls - again the "What if's" would be in my mind. I think I could go on and on and tell you about all the risks it took to build. As I look back here is what I learned about building this business: I knew it was going to be risky, but I learned to look at risk as a path that would eventually lead to growth. To say the same thing another way it would be this: no risk, no growth. Take the risk and learn or forget about living the dream.  Kind of harsh but true. Take some risks this week. You'll be glad you did.

Enthusiastically,
Gary Burke
